The OP was obviously very affected and shaken by this. So he had a drink and then had the audacity to come on here and share his feelings.

And instead of showing any sort of sympathy or even just ignoring his post if you found it so offensive, your (and several other posters') first instinct was to ridicule and belittle the guy.

But then again, as you mentioned, he had the gall to have a drink after seeing someone get shot-I suppose you're right...he deserves it.

fav post from the pre-o thread

They sure are suffering from some righteous indignation over in pre-o land.

If believing that we should all act with compassion, maturity, and respect towards people even if they dared have a shot of tequila before making a heartfelt post is your definition of "righteous indignation" (and apparently it is), then we are guilty as charged.

I can't figure out why there is this pervasive nastiness and vitriol regarding this thread here at the pre-allo, and why such negativity is completely absent in the pre-osteo version of this thread (I am sure one of you clever kids will figure out a way to attribute it to your higher average MCAT score or some other form of superiority).
There are obviously some exceptions and I applaud those of you here who don't feel the need to tear into this guy for absolutely NO reason, but overall there is no denying how different the two threads are.

For those of you that continue to defend the appropriateness of insulting the OP, I wish you would just step back for a second and look at what side of this you are on:

Do you really think the mature, compassionate thing to do is mock the guy? Would you behave this way if this were face to face?
What do you accomplish by attacking him-and I mean this literally-why do you feel the need to mock him when you could just as easily ignored his post if you found it that offensive?

Lastly, I'm 31 years old and certainly have experienced my fair share of drunk/high people waxing philosophical, thinking they are being far more profound than they really are. Do I think the OP went a bit over the top? Maybe, but my last inclination would be to belittle the guy for it-I just can't figure out why for so many of you, it was your first.

he deserves to be ridiculed because the writing was incoherent: he says that his advice "was to get a shirt and attempt to stop the bleeding" and yet doesn't indicate that he was the one who did it. so basically, he did nothing and his "true hero" was the person who sent him home? how can he be disgusted with humanity if it was humanity who helped the guy while he did nothing and walked his impotent self home?

and for the best part: "here's the rest of my patrone shot"
lol he didn't even finish the shot the first time

Agreed. Best I can tell, some dude was non-lethally shot, the OP wasn't much help so somebody named Eric sent him home. So OP got drunk. OP is now inspired to work harder so he won't be such a useless drunk. Thinks this event should somehow inspire the rest of us as well.🙂

I imagine Eric as an EMT/paramedic who tells OP to back off of the gunshot victim once the ambulance arrives. Eric shows off mad paramedic skillz and impresses OP, who then proceeds to post on SDN in a fervor.

We're all trying to piece the story together, lol.

Its pointless to argue with these children man. An alternative reality exists on SDN in which people with less life experience tell people more than 10 years their senior how to live life....and then belittle them when they post with maturity. Premeds know far more about life and medicine than med students and residents lets face it. 🙄

LOL Get over yourself. Most med students that I've come across have never had full time jobs or filed taxes. Most went from leaching off their parents to leaching of the tax payer in the form of gov loans all the way up to 26 years of age. So if some med student or resident who has that background ever tries to tell me (a 27-year-old who has been a been working full time and supporting himself since he was 18, and working part-time while I was 15-17) that I'm going to laugh in their face. Not all pre-meds are 19 years old with limited life experiences. 😉

I can only imagine how a post like this would be taken on "pre-DNP boards"...

"But, did you hold the patient's hand, and treat him as a whole person...instead of as a pesky constellation of diseases?"

I keed I keed!

My only real issue with this thread is that it is "patrón," not “patrone.”
You would know that if you weren't drinking El Toro.

Get over myself? Why because it wasnt my first thought to belittle someone who went through a traumatic event? I cant even mentally grasp the concept that that would be someones first instinct. Like I said over in pre osteo...the dude was over the top. I 100 percent agree with you there. Still doesnt mean its proper to rip on the guy. I will never change my opinion on that. I am your age and too have been working since age 14 to support myself....alllll the way through until I matriculated to med school....so you just "met" a med student that falls outside your example. Youd think by 27 youd pick up on the fact that you just dont act like an *****hole for no reason. You people over here in pre allo love to be uber concerned over every little nitpicky detail regarding your chances of getting into med school. Think about how an adcom would perceive you bashing this guy? You think they are going to think its okay? Absolutely not. Yeah this is the internet but its time to grow up. This isnt 4chan, this isnt misc, this is a pre professional/professional forum for people that are going to be DOCTORS for gods sake, act like it.

Wow. We made fun of him for drunk posting. I couldn't even make sense of the story nor was I able to tell if it was real. Seriously, who the hell is Eric?! Anways, your first post used the word "ruthless" to describe posts 2-5. I don't see anything "ruthless" in those posts. I think you may have grown up in some sort of sheltered neighborhood because you keep talking about the posters as if they launched a full scale attack on the op. 🙄

Someone page the OP to return and detail the story sober please. It could end up a good story.

he's busy studying "the **** out of gross anatomy and physiology" so he doesn't have time to tell the rest of the story.

Pre-allo= d-bags
Pre-osteo= "wise" (aka condescending)

Everyone = jerks 👍

We are on the internet after all. Get over it.

The pre-DO version of this post is pretty funny. Everybody is patting themselves (and pre-DOs as a whole) on the back for making super srs posts, without considering that DO students/premeds aren't barred from posting in the pre-allo board.

This just makes me laugh honestly. It's always gotta come down to the MD/DO battle huh? Serious posts in response to a serious situation, regardless of the poster's state of mind and writing capabilities during the post, are just a normal human emotional response. Comments like the ones in this forum have got to make people wonder...if there's such a need to mock someone who's faced an obstacle and feels inspired enough to share it, how will future patients get treated when they inevitably come with ridicule-worthy situations?? Yeah yeah, call it being overdramatic if you will, but behavior behind closed doors is usually pretty indicative of character.

Just to clarify, I'm starting at a DO school in August. It's MD/DO because there are two forums and I was pointing out the silliness in the DO thread.

coooool, maybe you should continue your pondering in the do thread. this just makes me laugh because you are clearly perpetuating the md/do battle

can I be an MD-DO if I take OMT classes?

can I be an MD-DO if I take OMT classes?

No. You can be an MD who believes in and practices OMT. Nobody is going to grant you a DO degree just for taking the OMT portion of the curriculum.

There used to be sketchy organizations where if you had a DO degree you could pay them to "grant" you an MD, but those were snuffed out, as far as I know.

what if I stretch a bunch?

Hahahahahaha...you guys are truly ruthless. I hope you get humbled by a trauma pt sometime. Hopefully you won't have the dreaded reaction to want to improve so you can provide better care for some sort of hypothetical "pt" you're responsible for. 🙄

Given that the op got drunk and dramatic, but that's seriously the only thing you guys care about? The maturity level here makes me stoked for my interviews. Carry on.

Dude, snuggling has been proven to be helpful to those who need when there is someone who is struggling with the hope you find in what brings this much to where there's even a possibility of hope. So pet some rabbits before you bash the entire osteopathic profession.

I'm trying to visualize what you're saying...

Am I close?

Edit: I just realized that this thread was actually almost dead. Sorry, for prolonging it's end...

That bunny picture + all the posts going "lol 1 shot of patron" makes this thread kind of worth keeping alive. SRS situation aside, I lol'd, would read again.

I wasn't trying to point you out...I just thought it was funny that it inevitably gets brought up. Like it matters, you know? The rest of my post wasn't directed at you and I didn't make that very clear. However, I don't think it can really be denied that this thread was equally as silly lol.

Nah, I think I'll continue my pondering here too, but thanks for the suggestion 🙂

I apologize for the bump of the thread (since apparently that is such an inconvenience/annoyance to some people). It just amazes me how nothing can be said in a forum without instigating unnecessary arguments. Makes me feel like I'm back in high school with half the things I read.
