this semester's grades are terrible!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone! 1st time poster, long time reader here. I'm applying to DO schools for Fall '07 admission and was just wondering how much emphasis is placed on this semester's grades?. I will be getting a C-/D in Microbiology due to my lack of effort (aka senioritis). My primary application just got processed, so I'll be filling out secondaries in the near future.
1. Will all schools see my grades by the time I get interviewed?
2. Will this bad grade in an upper level bio be of more concern to adcoms because I'm a non-science major, and thus only have the few pre-requisite science courses? (This grade will have a larger impact on my science GPA due to the relatively few science classes I have taken.)

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I'm applying to 17 Osteopathic Schools.
My stats - 3.38 overall, 3.46 non-sci, 3.21 sci gpa, & 25 MCAT 🙁

Ill give you my honest opinion here..but im not sure i know what im talking about!

Your GPA and MCATs are not terrible and would probably be good enough to get you an acceptance somewhere. However you now have two things working against you.

First of all you're applying very late in the application process so that is just naturally going to hurt your chances of getting accepted

Second of all, due to your late application, you wont receive any interviews until after winter break and therefore schools will want to see your transcripts from the fall semester. It would be much much better if you could get that grade up to a c or c+ but definately make sure it doenst fall into the D range

The one positive is that micro is not a pre-requisite course so it wont have as much weight as some classes, however if you could get yourself an incomplete or anything which will keep schools from seeing that score at the time of the interview it might help, but I dont know if that will be possible.

If I had to give any advice it would be to go ahead and apply and hope that the school is willing to forgive that grade. It really cant hurt to give it a try Realistically you MAY be looking at having to take a year off (its not so bad...i took two) If so make sure you're taking difficult SCIENCE courses (like 4 of them) the next semester and kick that senioritis and get some very good grades. If you do that and apply very early for the Fall 08 cycle you will have a very very excellent chance of receiving multiple interviews and acceptances. I hope you make it in this year but if not i'm sure you'll have better luck in the next year. I hope this wasnt too pestimistic, you definately still do have a chance for this year!

I think you will be fine, good luck in the process

The claim of senioritis is a common and of low value with adcoms, so I wouldn't use it unless you have to. Try your best not to get a D. I know that at my school if you get a C in more than one of your classes in your major, you're on academic probation. Harsh, I know. If you don't need micro to graduate and you can get a W in the course, do it. Kick butt on the final. Now to answer your questions.

1) Schools will not see your semester grades unless you send AACOMAS or the school the transcript, which you will HAVE to eventually.

2) The grades in an upper level science course may raise a red flag, but that should not prevent you from getting an interview. Be prepared to answer for the grade at the interview.

Best of luck. With your stats and your application to 17 DO schools, you should be sitting on an acceptance come May/June.

The schools, atleast many I imagine, will ask for your fall semester grades. I was complete the first of September and had all my interviews and acceptances already (I am in the same boat as the original poster), but I have been accepted already. I just got an interview from KCOM and they asked to see my fall grades before I actually come out to Kirksville. I would really spend some time trying to patch up that grade. I really dont know if you will or will not get an interview. I would say that it would look bad that you have slacked off because of serioritis: ALL of us get it, I think that you may have picked a bad time to express it, because you havent gotten interviews or acceptances yet. Your grades a good and you will get an interview, virtually anywhere DO, with a 25 on the MCAT. I would highly suggest making up a really good excuse to have your school give you a W in that class, or you could have your professor write you a letter to justify you having a tough semester. I know that many schools are pretty lenient. You will be just fine, just make sure you dont slack off until you get in somewhere.

Good luck!!👍

Avoid the D at all cost! Someone of importance will know about in the future and then you will have alot of explaining to do. It will also lower your science gpa dangerously close to being below a 3.0. 😱

1. Will ALL schools ask for my Fall semester grades before the interview or only certain ones?

If all of your prereqs are complete in your primary then the short answer is No.

You completed all of your prereqs? Acceptance will be based only on your primary application grades that should include all of your prereqs. If you are complete in AACOMAS and your current fall courses are set as "in progress" via AACOMAS then shcools should not see these grades until after your acceptance when they request final transcripts.

If you still have prereqs to complete then some schools will want to see those grades in a transcript before granting an interview and/or acceptance.

Talk to as many people (prof, dean, advisor, etc.) at your school as possible about your grade. After you get an acceptance you will want to find out if the course needs to be retaken (to keep your acceptance) since it is not a prereq. If it is in your major then you will have to retake anyway to graduate.

Your acceptance is usually contingent on certain factors such as:
satisfactory progress since primary
completing your degree
etc.

It is best to avoid a C- or lower but it seems you are unable to do anything about that. work hard.
:luck:

That's the most crucial thing I've heard so far because pretty much all acceptances have contingencies. They are usually based on both your completing the degree AND having no change in academic performance. They don't like people who "slack off" just because undergrad is nearly over. They don't like it at all. You'd better be prepared to let them know about this in advance and come up with a better excuse than "senioritis". That one won't fly.

Thanks for all of the quick and informative replies! I'm impressed and thankful about how helpful everyone is. I'll probably start posting here more frequently in the upcoming weeks, so continue checking the forums please 😀

My grades for Microbiology just got posted. I did well on the final and this kind of brought me out of the hole. I ended up with a C instead of a D. Again, thanks for the input and good luck with everything!

Yea for no D!! 👍 👍

haha if you posted that you got a C in the allo forum they would have eaten you alive. Good job pulling that grade up!!

I'm looking at a straight-B semester again...ugh. Probably due to my SDN addiction

Here's how it's shaping up:

B - Micro
B+/A- - Biochem
B - Psych Methods (yeah should have done better, but the papers were so damned tedious)
A/A- - Med Ethics
B- - Genetics

Somewhere around a 3.1/3.2. At least i'm consistent 🙁

I just ended up with B in immunology. I already have my bachelor degree as of more than a year ago. I should stop taking classes!

Wow Dr.Max you took some pretty hard classes. Biochem + genetics + micro isn't fun. Psyc research methods and the strict paper guidelines were so annoying. I took pretty easy classes and still got a C in micro 😱 I hope I'm not as lazy next semester...

On the last paper, I lost 15 points for formatting. 15/100. I am so glad it's over.

Genetics is going to be scary. He hasn't set the gradelines yet. Let's hope it's a B- and not worse... ack.

Next semester is gonna be NUTS.

Here's what I have scheduled:

Child Psychopathology
Abnormal Psychology
Physiology Lab (yay)
Writing in the Humanities (my only remaining prereq, btw)
Medical Microbiology (the reason I took micro this semester)
Biochemistry 402 (supposed to be ridic hard)
