Currently a student at CSULB. Just want to know more information about the program. I'm planning on transfering to UCR because of the Thomas Haider Program. What do you guys think? What are the number of applicants that usually apply to the program?

Its really hard to tell at this point how many students apply to the new UCR/UCLA biomed program. I'm a member of the class of 2008 biomeds, but that was under the old program rules. I believe the quoted figure is that they expect about 250-300 students to apply for the 24 seats each year, which isn't all that bad of a ratio compared to the traditional route at many other US Medical schools. Perhaps more people will find out about this program and there may be more than 300 students applying to the program for C/O 2011, 2012, 2013 and so on.

I think it'll be a great chance to get into a medical school like UCLA. However, your first two years are spent at the UCR campus. This by no means is a bad thing, because our curriculum parallels the systems-based curriculum that UCLA currently uses (suppose you have an organ system, like the cardiovascular system - you learn the embryo, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology associated with that system, then you move on). The class size is small, and the environment is very cozy and friendly. You'll still have a lot of patient experience with community physicians in the riverside area, plus weekly classes on how to interview patients, and perform the physical exam etc.

http://biomed.ucr.edu can tell you more about my program than I can in this short amount of time. I really should be getting to bed... Silly board exams.

I've spoken to students that are going into this years class at UCR/UCLA..and it is something like 300 kids that apply for 24 spots. Before it was strictly UCR students that could apply, but now they have expanded it students outside of UCR that can apply. The few students that I did meet said that it is cut-throat because its so competative, but it has gotten better...

Also, please don't bump threads that are still in the first two pages, it annoys ppl like Bluntman and me!

i believe the ucr/ucla thomas haider program is a great program especially since the curriculum is the same as the ucla's... i have to stress that it is competitive but not as competitive as straight up applying to ucla for med...

i just got accepted into the program and i believe that approximately 300 or more applied for the 24 spots... it reminds me of the Drew/UCLA program in that they specifically look for people who are committed in underserved medicine... also you have to be aware that biomeds that didn't make in to the program from previous years can reapply = extremely high stats...

i believe that the small classroom size can give you a great environment to grow as a medical student 👍

Thanks for the input. I apologize for the bumping earlier.

I sense competition! DAMN YOU! I have to compete with fellow SDN members, sigh. I'm going to need a miracle. 👎
