I went to high school in the bronx, near AECOM, so I know the area well.
The area might be a shock if you've never been exposed to an economically disadvantaged/full of illegal immigrants neighborhood. However, as long as you stay in the campus and use the shuttle buses, you're fine. Bronx isn't that bad, it just takes getting used too.

C'mon guys...toughen up. This isn't even the South Bronx...we're not talking gangland violence like you'd get at Hopkins, Yale, or Penn...it's just a bunch of apartment buildings filled with poor immigrants. A lot of hispanics, kosovars, and other ethincs. A decent percentage of black and white, too, of course. But I mean, c'mon people...it's a nice area...fine medical school...where did you want to go to school Cambridge? Ann Arbor? Upper East Side? Those places aside, I'd say that most urban schols are more dangerous than AECOM: USC, the Philly schools, Downstate, and all of the schools I mentioned above. It's really a nice area...a short bus ride/ drive from the bornx zoo and other pretty places. AECOM is definitely one of my top choices, and aside from Sinai, proably the safest.

Where'd you go to school? Bronx Science?
Shuttle bus?! Just get yourself a Glock and a nice IWB holster, and strut around like you own the place. In 4 years, you'll never have to buy ammo. The concealed Glock is just to give you confidence...and an insurance policy, so you don't spend your life waiting for namby-pamby shuttle buses. Just my $.02.

Funny thing is that one of the Assistant Deans at Downstate told me that Downstate's neighborhood is sooo friendly that if people notice you are lost, they will ask if you need directions.

I went to AECOM for interview and it's in the nicer part of Bronx...it seems safe to me, although they have security guards at the entrances for all the buildings.

I went to undergrad in CA, and lived near the Oakland/Berkeley border. I also spent a few extra days around Einstein while visiting for an interview in order to see the neighborhood, talked with students, faculty, cabbies, etc.
First off, the neighborhood around Einstein is a mid to lower class suburban area. It is very quiet. I would not call it a "ghetto". It is similar to the neighborhood to the south of Berkeley as far as feel (though with many more European immigrants). I think it is safe (students walk through in the middle of the night with no ill effects). The bus to manhattan is comfortable, takes about 30-40 minutes, and is an express, not stopping very often between NYC and Einstein and not in the dodgy areas en route. There is a diverse strip of restaurants down a nearby street.
The guards have been upped since the events of 9/11, and they have some extra security features (little badges everyone wears). I was given the impression that this was due more to anti-terrorism than any inherent danger of the largely Italian neighborhood. It is a little strange to have to flash a badge everywhere, though not much different than many labs.
Overall, I do not consider the neighborhood to be a drawback. It is quiet, so you can sleep at night and study, while close enough to the city to take evening or weekend trips even without owning a car (via the express). If you have never lived in a place where homeless people sleep on the street it may seem like a "ghetto", but it does not have the violence or poverty that this word implies.

I will say this- I had back to back interviews at Downstate and AECOM over two days.
At Downstate, I was cat called in a full-on business suit at 10:00 in the morning. The neighborhood off the subway is SKETCH. However, the area immediately surrounding the campus is remarkably nicer. Also- I stopped and asked someone on the street for directions, and they were very friendly.
The neighborhood surrounding AECOM is a LOT nicer, in my opinion... Bronx or not. It's all relative.

i used to live near downstate (a marjority of my childhood was spent in that area) i never saw anything wrong. i mean, as long as you know how to handle yourself, you're fine. i don't know about the kid being shot though. never heard that story. but i don't think it's true, how could a bullet go through a dorm wall and land in his head? it doesnt make sense. wouldn't it have to hit the brick outside the dorm and that would stop it?

I also went to high school in the Bronx, but I was much closer than Bronx Science; I went to the Lutheran School at the top of the hill from AECOM. That section of the Boogie Down is not bad. It's a mostly Italian neighborhood and relatively quiet unless the kids from the middle and high schools are making noise (which doesn't happen too far past 6 or 7pm on a game night).
Having grown up in the Southeast section of the Bronx, I can honestly say that Albert Einstein would be one of your safest bets in terms of going to a school in NYC; not to mention the fact that the students are incredibly happy there (for the most part). I totally agree with the sentiment that the most prestigious institutions are in underserved, urban areas, and you'd probably have a greater likelihood of getting shot if you're in New Haven after dark. 🙂
My advice: You're going to be isolated between the campus and the local hospitals while in medical school, and you're probably not going to have too much time to worry about the surrounding area (unless you're thinking about taking a hip-hop tour of the South Bronx, shopping cheap, or chillin' at the Bronx Zoo). You'll probably spend most of your free time hanging out in Manhattan where the action is 🙂

The only two downstate stories involving death I can think of both date to the early/mid 90s.
1. A downstate grad pulled out an asault rilfe in a mosque at the tomb of the patriarchs in Hebron, killing a dozen people before being killed himself. [You just know he learned how to use the thing defending himself coming to and from downstate.] Oh well, all's fair in love, baseball, and terrorism...or something like that.
2. A 4th year medical student died on the wards. It was ruled an accidental overdose of Fentanyl, rather than a suicide...which just goes to show how good the anesthesia training is there...just kidding, Fentanyl has a very small therapeutic window, and self-medicating with these things is very hard....
Occasionally, stray bullets from area gang wars have been known to riccochet into upper-story windows, e.g. housing, classrooms, etc. but to the best of my knowledge, no student has ever been hit. You should definitely ask about this on your interviews, though...it'll demonstrate to your interviewer that you're a savvy student...and a neurotic freak from out of town. Why do you think they have a special section on their application for people from outside of NYC? Because of people like you who get all freaked out when you go to class in the morning and there's a broken window from some crossfire exchanged at 3am!
