What's your score?
Are you applying/re-applying this year?
Are you happy with your score or are you going to retake it?
I noticed that a lot of people who scored in the upper 20s are ambiguous about their score.

my score: 9,9,9
this is my second time applying
i'm borderline satisfied and confused

i got 10,9,8, and a Q.

thereby making my total a 27. I don't know either. Help? Is any medschool going to accept that? Do all medschools look at your total and individual categories?

I got a 7, 9, 10 (26Q). I'm probably going to take again, although I am dreading sitting for it one more time. I wish that would be good enough, but my physical science score as a 7 just isn't gonna cut it.

8,10,10 O. I'm happy with this score really. Out of UG for 8 years. Started studying 2 months before the exam and my highest score ever was a 21. I think upper 20's are a good score and many get accepted. Heck it's the average matriculation scores. People who retake with like 31,32, I don't know what they are thinking unless they HAVE to do ivy league or somethign. I just want to practice medicine.

I got a 25Q with a 7,8,10 hopefully I'll get in somewhere. (Praying Hail Mary) This is much better than the 20 from April

8,10,9 27Q (was getting 33 on practice tests!)

:luck: :luck: Hope to god that I get in somewhere! :luck: :luck:

I got:

VR 10
PS 7
BS 10
WS P

Total of 27 P. I don't wanna retake. But if things are looking dismal by the end of December... I'll reconsider at that point.

According to the 2004-2005 MSAR, 50% of those with a 27 on the MCAT get accepted, and a little over 1/3 with a 25, and a little less than 1/3 with a 24 get accepted. I got a 28, so I hope to make the most of any interview I get!

Good luck everybody! :luck:

Same here! Good luck to all of you 'twentysomethings'!

I got a 27Q in April (10BS, 10PS, 7VR) and a 25Q in August (8BS, 9PS, 8VR). Of course I am kicking myself and now I wish I had just stuck with that 27Q. Especially after reading about all of the other people who got in with sub-30 scores. My other stats are strong (high GPA, good LORs, etc). I hate the MCAT!

Maybe we can keep this thread going and keep each other posted as to interview offers, etc. I'm trying not to get discouraged and just keep going! Everything happens for a reason, right? But it's not always easy!

I truly wish all of you the best of luck! The MCAT isn't the only indicator of who will make a good doctor....Look at all the people with super high MCATs that don't even get interviewed, and then people with sub-30 scores who do.

Keep the faith! I'm trying to!

Karin

P.S. I also heard that UMass and Tufts take the best score from each section (for any retakers out there).

I got a 28-O wohoo and I'm damn proud of it 😀. That is the mean score for people matriculated into UT-Memphis, my number one choice because of the amazing pediatric programs in the area. I'm not interested in research I just want to practice medicine!

Hi!
I got a 11BS 9VR 8PS L, and its way better than what I thought it would be so I'm content (I'm a native Spanish speaker) and I'm not really sure if I want to retake this evil exam or not :meanie:
But other than that, I feel a GREAT relief it's over 😀

Unless you're an URM or DO-bound, I would retake with anything below a 29. Just man up and take the test again. Such is life.

No knee-jerk need everyone under a 29 to re-take. Just be sure that you apply to schools that are within your reach based on your GPA and MCAT. And remember, averages are not minimums. (for some reason people applying to medical school seem to forget this)

🙂

Exactly, when you are talking about the mean of a normal distribution there is always a standard deviation with higher and lower values of accepted applicants. By no means is it manditory to retake the MCAT with a score below 29 to get into most state schools.

If your MCAT score is below the mean and don't apply you will never know. Sure it is expensive, but at least if you get rejected you'll know you need to improve because admissions weighs experiences heavily too.

I was really stupid and retook with a 26Q...just checked my scores and dropped 3 points, 23S. Good luck to you all, and I hope I don't have to reapply. I am SO angry at myself at this point.

Thanks! That makes me feel better. I am soooo tired of hearing people complain about scores like a 38. Those are great scores people!!!! Be thankful that you did well and don't worry about it. Congrats to everyone for getting through this one! 👍

i retook the MCAT
april PS 7 VR 8 BS 10 W Q

august PS 10 VR 8 BS 10 W O

I only improved by one point...but im happy that i did better in the PS which was my major concern.

I am an URM. I have a 3.565 GPA, with a 3.85 my last two years.

What do you think are my chances? my apps are already out!

Very true. I think part of the reason we (or *I*) forget is that we are mostly used to doing well in high school and (most of us) in college, so we are not used to being 'below' the mean. And few of us are used to applying to a degree program where there are no schools that we know with absolute certainty will accept us, so a score that 'guarantees' us acceptance into a medical school is seen as minimal standard to get in. It's more pyschological than anything else, yes, people who score in theri 20's DO get in, just not as many. 🙂

With a high 20's score, you're probably gonna need more than just lettuce in your salad to get an allo interview. For those who do have research, volunteering and other good stuff in their app's , do well in the interview, and you might look better to the adcom's than people in the high30's.
I am happy with my 27O because I feel like I could make a good impression at any interview.

Maybe your problem is math.

28O is a decent score as is 3.65 for gpa, with a positive trend. So you have a chance of getting in somewhere.

Just apply to a wide range of schools like Ohio state University, Howard, Meharry, Mercer, Finch (Rosalind Franklin), NYMC, and Albany.

what about Drexel or Jefferson.

With those scores, I'm sure you'll get in somewhere, and the above schools have decent avgs within those ranges.

Well, it looks like I may be the record holder for the lowest score on this post . . .

April 04: PS=6, VR=8, BS=8; total=22N

August 04: PS=7, VR=8, BS=8; total=23Q

I highly doubt my score is getting me in anywhere. I have a strong app otherwise, but I think most schools have limits . . . you need at least *blank* MCAT score, and I'm confident a 23 isn't cutting it. I'm sooooooooooo looking forward to retaking this thing next year! 😡

I bet you are! Good luck Khenon. I'm sorry things didn't work out better for you. 3rd times a charm, right? :luck: Maybe you can set the record improvement score. 🙂

What about DO or Carribbean schools.

That is unsound advice.

I took the MCAT in 199X. I got

BS: 11
PS: 11
VR: 9
WR: O

My GPA was around 3.90 the first time I applied and a 3.86 when I graduated. I didn't get in. I was really sad that I didn't get in but I guess my heart wasn't really into it. Good Luck Guys!!!

By the way, asians are NOT considered underrepesented minorities. Here are some stats that will shock you guys:

National Acceptance stats for 1993:

Asian Females:
Accepted: 3.54 VR: 9.4 PS: 9.5 WR: P BS: 9.6 Acc rate:35%
Asian Males:
Accepted: 3.54 VR: 9.4 PS: 10.7 WR: P BS: 10.3 Acc rate:35%

White Females:
Accepted: 3.55 VR: 9.8 PS: 9.8 WR: P BS: 9.4 Acc rate: 42%
White Males:
Accepted: 3.50 VR: 9.7 PS: 10.0 WR: P BS: 9.9 Acc rate: 42%

Mexican Females:
Accepted: 3.20 VR: 8.3 PS: 7.3 WR: 0 BS: 8.1 Acc rate: 58%
Mexican Males:
Accepted: 3.17 VR: 8.3 PS: 8.3 WR: O BS: 8.8 Acc rate: 50%

Black Females:
Accepted: 3.12 VR: 7.7 PS: 6.7 WR: O BS: 7.1 Acc rate: 39%
Black Males:
Accepted: 3.05 VR: 7.5 PS: 7.4 WR: N BS: 7.6 Acc rate: 40%

My school stopped distributing these stats after the URMs complained that it was discrimination. Considering the acceptance rate, it seems to me that only ASIANS are suffering from discrimination. Wouldn't it be funny if we applied quotas to sports?

27Q here...
This post is important because people are afraid to post on this site if they don't do well above average. Just remember that a 25 was ABOVE AVERAGE for this year.. which is good in itself! be proud fo your scores, and good luck! I'm glad I live in Canada where the Mcat isn't as important at most schools!

Your stats are impressive. Why didn't you get in??? Did you botch your interviews???

I basically didn't get in because I wasn't sure that I wanted to be a doctor. I couldn't answer the question "why do you want to be a doctor?"

Wow?! A 25 was ABOVE average for this year (assuming that we're talking about the August 2004 MCAT?)

I suddently feel much, much smarter! 😀

I Got a 10 10 8 (8 in verbal) with a 3.6 GPA, decent research/volunteer and a sport and I got my first interview invite today from suny upstate.

took the MCAT for the second time this past August:
got a 26M 🙁10PS 5VR 11BS). The first time I took it I got a 23Q (8PS 6VR 9BS). I think this is a significant improvement..especially in the sciences...and my undergrad GPA is 3.937...Good letter of reccomendation from my pre-med committee, some volunteer work, and some extracirrulars related to my biochemistry major. Anyway...hearing u guys talk so optimistically with grades in the 20's makes me feel much more at ease about applying this year (first time).... also..I am Colombian...Hope that helps me out some 😀

And believe it or not, I got in. Yes, I represent a true middleclass SDN success story. Good luck to all!

Those are my exact scores - my fingers are crossed! Here's to the middleclass. 😀

28O
I applied in August of '02 with a late MCAT score and got nothing. Applied in June of this year and have 5 interviews so far. So, if this cycle doesn't work out for you the key is to APPLY EARLY!!!

Cammy - did you retake the MCAT or did you have the same score when reapplying? Congrats on all those interviews and good luck! :luck:

25Q

Retaking in August '05.

Was/still am very disappointed. Probably wouldn't have been as disappointed as I am, except my practice test scores were around 29-31 and my GPA is 4.05 (on a 4.3 scale). Also, I'm Canadian, eh? So I DO need extraordinary numbers to get accepted on this side of the border, along with a Gold Medal for curing a 3rd-world country of disease X.
