So I guess I'm one of "those" kids - I was premed until I was predent, making the switch this last semester of my college career. I applied to med school last fall, but stopped midway through the application season after sending money for secondary applications to several schools. I just wasn't feeling the medicine thing anymore.
I won't go into too much detail, but yes, I switched because I wanted to - I was a little late, but after thinking about the doctors I'd spoken to and shadowed, I didn't want to be where they were. I didn't have any good examples or role models, except the ones on TV.
And for the still-doubtful, I've talked to my advisor, and she told me "don't use Dschool as a backup unless you actually want to go - your #'s and ec's are enough to get into med school if you re-apply early". I've shadowed a GP for 10 hours, have been working as a dental assistant for ~35 hours, and am about to start working in a dental lab with ceramics and metalwork. So yes, I'm sure about this.
All of that aside... on the AADSAS app, it asks whether I've applied to other prof. schools before, and all of my extracurricular volunteering has been in hospitals. I'm not going to lie, of course, but I feel as though my personal statement should directly address why I switched from medicine, and 'justify' my decision. Is this necessary? Should I 'defend' my choice, or just go ahead and start writing why I believe dentistry is a good fit?
