Thoughts on changing last name (too long)

Hi,

So my last name is really long. For anyone else who suffers from this malady, it's a huge pain, especially with patients, prescriptions, pharmacies, etc. The amount of time I waste trying to spell my name out or correcting my name in various forms is incredible.

So I've been thinking of legally shortening my name but I'm concerned that this is going to be a bigger pain, in terms of changing my diplomas, state license, etc. I know many women have gone through this process 2/2 marriage, but I'm wondering if anyone else has considered a name change for the above reasons?

Also, if I decide NOT to change my last name, is it possible to just start using a shortened version for everything (eg, taxes, scripts, etc.)? Or is this going to be problematic. Sorry for the ignorance on the issue. Would appreciate any insights.

I wouldn't shorten it. Get a cheap stamp for prescriptions. Go by Dr. A or whatever first letter you have or Dr First Name. Patients prefer as simple as possible anyway.

Your name is part of your heritage. Your concern is understandable. At the same time, if it is not causing you embarrassment or social stigma (like a guy of whom I'd heard whose family name was "Rape", or if you were "Hitler), it's you.

Some people of whom I can think: Gen. John Shalikashvili, Dr. John Skiendzielewski, and Dr. Hratch Karamanoukian. All have succeeded and done well.

I understand your issue, but, in the bigger picture, it works. As TexasPhysician says, you can just go by "Dr. A" - two of my colleagues are known as "Dr. Bob" and "G".

It is a legitimate concern and it is your right to change it. It is just a name and it is worth it if it makes your life easier.

There will be confusion for a while when it comes to using a shortened/different version of your last name when it comes to gov't agencies but as long as you have your certificate of name-change, then it's fine.

I have a shortened version of my signature for work and a stamp for when I have to write my full name, which over here is pretty much every time you write anything.
