I'm applying to dental school right now and was thinking about applying to Columbia. However, I've heard a lot of negative things about the school from some posts. Starkiss I know that you just completed your first year there....could you give us some insight into your experience at Columbia so far (social and academic)? Thanks!

hmm I guess you're refering to me????
The academic's ok...obviously I'm not at the top of the class...and definately don't deserve to be w/ the little studying I do 😛 at times I feel overwhelmed...but then so does all my other friends at other schools so... who knows. I feel competent w/ the dental labs we've had so far.... I think Dr. Hsu's excellent and he teaches us to be perfectionest 🙂 (I still have yet to figure out how to be one of them tho...) Anatomy's a TON of stuff...the exams are nearly impossible unless you're a genius (and I am sure you are). But just about everyone ends up doing fine cause gradings pretty fair 🙂 I think for the profs are really there to help you...although there's no scheldued time for office hours are such, you can always email them w/ questions (and they respond pretty fast) or set up a time to meet w/ them. Hmm what else?
OH...the opportunities are so limitless... Just about everyone I know that applied for a summer research grant got one 🙂 so that's definately an A+ for the school.
Socially, hmm couldn't be better 🙂 A lot to see and do in NYC...My classmates hang out a lot all over the place... If you get sick of being in Wash Ht. you can always take the shuttle down to the main campus...it's beautiful 🙂 a lot of my classmmates study down here also. The Seinfield resturant is a short walk away 🙂 Lots of good food.
Is this good enough? 🙂

opps, yeah i was referring to you...don't know why i said starkiss:hardy:

Anyways, thanks for your reply! It was really helpful. A couple of more questions for you if you don't mind:

1) Do you have your classes with the med. students there?

2) Do most of the students in the dental school there seem to be as happy as you are?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, and it's not that bad at all...cause you'll have to learn this stuff anyways (and it's probably even better if you want to go to Oral Surgery since at some schools you can skip some med school trainning) And plus you meet more people and make more friends and stuff 🙂 I don't mind it...HOWEVER sometimes it feels crappy when the profs only refers to the Med students... but oh well there's like 2 or 3 of them for every one of us

2) Do most of the students in the dental school there seem to be as happy as you are?
I hope so. I know some from my class are for sure...but i can't say for everyone... but the upperclassmen seem to not like it as much...especially the 05 class (my theory is cause they came here and w/in a less than a month 9-11 happened...and their class is way more competitive) It's fun here, why not enjoy it and not get held up by grades...(but from what I know you won't have to worry bout grades since it's going to be HONORS/PASS/FAIL...this is even better than the Exceptional Pass/Pass/Marginal Pass/Fail at UCLA!)

any more questions? 🙂

DO NOT COME TO COLUMBIA
DO NOT EVEN APPLY
SAVE YOUR $40

FMLizard, you go to Columbia too?

Hehe...no.

Remember that "new york blows" guy who was here a couple weeks ago. That was his signature.

too bad you can't join us.
we could've talked more about your theory regarding the american immigration problems, and how that affects dentistry, more or less.
