I am currently a sophomore and I will be taking the MCAT at the end of junior year...I think...
I plan on taking a gap year (to travel, and/or continue research) before heading off to med school. The last cycle of the current exam is the year I am taking it (Junior year); however, after I take the gap year, most of my fellow applicants will have taken the 2015 version and by then, med schools will probably require that all students take the 2015 version. Thankfully, I am majoring in humanities so I do not think the change will make a big difference for my score but idk if I should even bother taking the 2014 one since prepping for the exam is a long process. Something deep down is telling me to TAKE IT! and I really do want to see how I do...but is it worth taking if I (probably will) have to retake the MCAT in 2015?
Thanks.

Yup med schools will definitely change their minds and require the new mcat even if you have taken the old one within 3 years.

Here is my thought on the MCAT 2015:

Are you guys serious that the 2014 MCAT will not last for 3 years and you will need to take the 2015 one anyway?

I'm in the same boat right now and would like some discussion on this. I've heard some people say yes, you will need to take the 2015 MCAT and no as long as the MCAT isn't expired you don't need to take the new one. Haven't heard anything to confirm either statement. Sucks that we're stuck during the transition period 👎

No. MedPR was being sarcastic.

MCAT scores from exams taken prior to the introduction of the 2015 MCAT will continue to be valid until schools choose to no longer recognize them (typically 3 years). Schools are not going to just throw out everyone's scores and make everyone take the exam again. There will be a transition period where the have applicants with scores from both exam versions.

I'm taking the MCAT here in 2013, and my score will be valid if I choose to apply in 2015.

I'm taking the MCAT 2015... Shoot me.
I might have an advantage though because I'm already studying sociology y, ethics, ext.. Everyone is going to be on the same level and with SDN I feel like I will have a leg up on the average premed who doesn't know what is going to be on the MCAT.

I think it is highly unlikely that schools will force students to take the new MCAT. It would be an unprecedented move costing many students thousands of dollars when there's not reason for that, especially when schools have built up all their experience, knowledge, and research in analyzing applicants using the old MCAT.

No one can "know" as each school is free to do what they like. But I find it unlikely that schools will force students to take the new one when they can just let it phase in after 3 years anyway. I'd take the old one if I were in your situation.

I have a leg up cause i don't have to take it! woohooo
