Michigan is my state school, and the school that I am leaning towards at this point (vs. LLU, Marquette, Case, Midwestern, Maryland and Indiana) but I have gotten some mix opinions from the dentist I work for as well as various alumni of the school regarding the level of clinical experience, the attitudes of the students and of the faculty. Any thoughts?

Thank you for your input!

Michigan is a good school, my brother went there. Clinically it is some what deficient not in its teaching or anything but just because its area in AA is semi-wealthy therefore you just dont get a whole load of diversity. If you want to specialize, the brand name will boost you. There is a stigma i guess from dentists in Michigan but lately my brother has been saying the same, Michigan is not producing the quality of dentists it used to. Essentially those that graduate immediately from Michigan are compared from those that graduate from UDM, and out of the gates the UDM graduates are seen as the ones with the stronger clinical experience. In the end Michigan is a fine school, but you also have a fine list of schools to choose from. I would factor cost/clinical experience in the most. Good luck

Hey I think you are the one we were at all the same interviews with (Midwestern, Marquette, Michigan and Indiana). I was accepted at all those too and have narrowed it down to Michigan and Marquette, but I am thinking more Michigan. I know they used to be known for research but when they changed to the new curriculum I feel they are placing more focus on clinical skills. I was really impressed with the 10 week externship and all the students that were interviewers all seemed to love it there (I even emailed one to ask some questions and it was very helpful). Good luck with your choice!

I had the same thoughts about the students that interviewed us. They all seemed to have such great things to say but then when ever I talked to those outside the University I got mixed opinions.

hifive: thanks for your input. I have some thinking to do!

Would you be willing to share what you've learned about the school in regards to their clinical experience, attitudes of the students and faculty, and overall feel of the school? I'm sure other people are in your position about Michigan.

I have. I am planning on attending Michigan. I talked again to a few of the newer alumni and got some really positive feed back regarding some of my hang-ups.

It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine!

Thank you so much for your response. I just got into Michigan today and I am deciding between Michigan and Buffalo (100k difference), and I was a little hesitant about Michigan because of what you said with their clinical training and reputation. I am leaning towards Michigan too and going to do more research.
