Thoughts on UCLA-Olive View

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The SoCal programs are generally pretty solid (with the sad exception of MLK/Drew due to the hospital and school's various troubles), but other than that I know almost nothing about the program despite practicing and living a rather short drive from them.

As for what to do for the weekend, depends on what you like to do. LA offers pretty much anything you want. Good food, nightlife, outdoor activity, surfing lessons, etc. PM me. If I'm available we can go grab a drink, and maybe I can persuade Spyder to come along.

I have heard it referred to as "the urgent care center down the road" (snicker...snicker...) by folks at LAC+USC.

We get quite a few resident moonlighters here in my ED. In general, they are just fine...One problem is that they tend to be VERY liberal on the use (Rx'ing) of narcs. One of the guys told me that they are taught (and required by the chief) to give plenty o' narcs to pts...I guess the seekers love to go to UCLA because they get what they want....Fine with me if they are staying out of my ER!
Otherwise, the residents coming out of there are very competent...
Good luck!
Mark

Why... Does USC see all the sick patients while UCLA tends to see little rich girls who cut their finger on a hanger while shopping?

Uh, that would be Location, Location, Location! USC is in East LA. UCLA is on the Westside. Pretty nice neighborhood in general...
Cedars and California are the closest trauma centers for mid-town, so an ambulance would have to bypass them to get to UCLA...Not gonna happen!
USC is in knife and gun club central (King-Drew is knife and gun club South-Central...haha) California just became level I, which is also in mid-town...So there are plenty of closer trauma centers for the knife and gun club areas, and UCLA Westwood just ain't in the middle of one of them....

Thanks for the Trauma info... But what about other sick patients? Does UCLA see lots of critical patients? sepsis, MIs, respiratory failure, etc???

It's not that bad, but look at where the hospitals are located. USC/County is downtown, closer to the poor and violence-ridden sections of town.

UCLA/Olive View's main hospital is UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, which is a pretty nice part of town. It's not far from Santa Monica which is some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Their secondary hospital, Olive View, is a county hospital located in the San Fernando Valley. They serve a largely indigent population, but it's not plagued by the same violence problems that USC/County and MLK/Drew are. You will probably see a fair number of sick patients there. UCLA/Olive View even rotates CCU through Cedars-Sinai MC. Talk about rich, upper class clientele! Cedars is where the rich and famous go when they need medical care. High quality, boutique medicine at its finest.

You will see sick people at all residency program hospitals. Rich people get sick too, but they tend to come in before the pathology gets too... ummm, ripe.

When saying "UCLA" you have to specify which program, since they have the very well-known program down at Harbor Medical Center as well.

Of note, while King/Drew is there, they recently closed their trauma program. They'll still get a lot of walk-ins/drop-offs, but not nearly like they used to. California Hospital is likely to pick up a lot of the trauma that used to go to King/Drew.

Thanks for the info guys... Sessamoid, sorry I didn't get ahold of you. I ended up going out in Venice last night to some bars and had a pretty good time. LA is great and I think the UCLA-Olive View program will be ranked highly on my ROL. I'm in SF now.

Heh, I was doing the same thing in Venice last night. Enjoy SF. I used to live on Russian Hill (just west of North Beach/Little Italy). Spyder just moved from the Bay Area not too long ago.

I'm gonna be in LA in June for a three day conference (paid for by my program!). I expect to be shown the nearest In-n-Out Burger as well as the best local watering hole while I'm there.

The closest In-n-Out is on Sepulveda Blvd (west side) about 1/2 mile north of Los Angeles International. Sepulveda is the first N/S street you'll hit leaving the airport, and you can stay on it to go to West LA.

Hey guys, any new info on the LA programs? the discussion above is helpful but I'd love to hear more about the UCLA-Olive View program. Does Olive View provide enough county-type experience to make up for the lack thereof at UCLA?

Also, what are the reasons for choosing USC-LAC over Harbor or vice versa? (Other than the little fact about medicine internship)

As previously mentioned, all of the LA programs are great...but it all depends on what you are looking for in a residency program. UCLA-Oliveview is a combination of high level tertiary care (i.e transplant patients) at the main campus in Westwood and Oliveview in the Valley serves the working poor. UCLA has several well known researchers and big contributors to EM. It is a 1-4 program.

Harbor-UCLA is in Torrance, CA, is funded by LA County, and is one of the main teaching hospitals for UCLA Med School. Harbor has always been a hospital very heavy in critically ill medical and trauma patients. The number of sick patients have really gone up since they took over most of the patients from the MLK area after the hospital closed and revamped itself as a outpatient center. In addition to caring for very underserved and sick patients, Harbor is known for its teaching and world-renowned faculty members. It is a 1-3 program. Despite it length, Harbor grads land jobs and opportunities very easily.

LAC-USC is in East LA and is also a county hospital who just moved into their new facility. USC is also known for having really sick medical and trauma patients. USC is often known as "Big County" in the area since it is the largest county hospital of LA. USC is also known for having great faculty members and training. It is a 2-4 program.

All of the LA programs are great, but you have to choose which one meets your interests. Good luck!
