I am curious if anyone on this site has any knowledge of or thoughts on the counseling psych programs at KU and UMKC. In your opinions are these good programs?

I am currently working closely with 3 KU counseling psych students at the nearby VA hospital. From what I can tell, the students are of top quality, and they speak very highly of the program. Are there any specifics you are wondering about the program?

Thanks. That was my impression from the info I have gathered on the programs. But every time I ask someone about UMKC in particular, I am told they do not know anything about the program. I am very interested in what I have seen at UMKC, so I wanted to find out if it has a good name in the field. I would like to teach after graduation, and I know where you graduate from can have an impact.

I know for sure that if you graduate from KU, it holds a ton of weight in terms of abilities to teach (of course part of their program is teaching classes). If I am not mistaken, I believe that their Counseling in Psychology is actually an EdD. Not sure if this has any impact on anything.

Practicing professors is an idea that is coming back swiftly, Universities want Professors who can walk the walk as well, so I cannot comment on UMKC as I haven't worked with anyone from their. I will say that KU more than prepares it's grad/doc students to be EXCELLENT practitioners.

Plus, you get to live in Lawrence, KS. How can you go wrong with that? Talk about the coolest city on Earth. 🙂
