Thread for Students Accepted with Mediocre Stats !

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
IMO, I believe Dental school look at your science GPA, DAT, Character..

Here's my story, I got great grades during school while working full-time. However, my DAT score was a complete bummer. I got a 17AA, with 14 in math and 16 in Reading. I also did most of my undergrad at a CommC. I believe too many studentdoc ppl believe it is about stats. Character plays a huge role, my admission essay had them telling their spouses about me. Every interview i attended they mention that they loved my essay and they couldn't wait to meet me. I got accepted to all 3 schools because I had great communicating skills in my interview. I am fortunate to be accepted and I know I am blessed. I just want to share my story b/c there's hope. God Bless

so did you get into school and which one? also are you a URM?

14 in math might get away at some schools, but a 16 in RC is pretty low and is below the cutoffs at a handful of schools.

Wow congrats to everyone. I was not so lucky! Have a 3.7 overall, 3.4 science. 17AA on DAT, 1,500 hours of volunteering including shadowing but not the majority, and strong letters. I'm also in a one year masters in medical sciences program. Applied to 7 schools, no interviews thus far (guessing DAT)! Praying for something!!! Low stats or good stats, you really never know.

Yes, accepted at all three, no im not URM. Yes I know, i am among the few, but understand, passion, hardwork, and alturistic behavior are better than any stat you can put in front of an admission commitee

Any chance you can pm me your essay? I think that might be where I went wrong in my application.

During the interviews, they gave us the stats for the incoming class (for those that interviewed)

the info they reported for the Adea handbook was lower so i dunno which set of numbers is correct.

good job!! you are one of the rare breeds who has turned water into wine. it usually doesnt work out so well for most below average students.

Thanks, but I give all honors to God .

Also, I showed them some of my drawings, paintings, pottery, and soap carvings. Understand, the interview is all about marketing the product (which is you). Showing them is better than teling. But dont pull it out and be like ,"Hey look what I got"...lol

damn i should have learned how to play the recorder or smth

Accepted to 3 schools yesterday with a 15 QR, 16 PAT, and 18 AA. 3.6 oGPA and 3.4sGPA. I seriously thought these stats would hold me back and I almost didn't apply but I'm so glad I did! Proof that you can get acceptances with scores below a 17 in sections.
Good luck to everyone and have faith in yourselves 🙂

Hi I am in the same boat as your stats, am so BEEP BEEP and BEEP 🙂 Happy for you but I am starting to lose hope🙁 for me!!!
My stats are exactly like yours🙂 when did you apply??
I sent mine the 1st week of september!! I have applied to 21 schools and have recieved 4 rejections
and no interviews!!! any hope for me???

are you a URM (just wondering)?

but regardless of that, congrats!

Yes, I am hispanic. I am just very thankful that these schools could see my potential and were willing to give me a chance 😳 Your DAT score is only 1 part of your application and says nothing about the person you are. There is way more that factors into being a successful dentist.

& THANK YOU!

2.77 oGPA (3.6oGPA at my university but transferred in with a 2.23 from a CC)
2.85 sGPA (3.7sGPA at my university - math from CC + AADSAS recalc killed it)
23AA/24TS/23PAT

Research + publications
300+ hrs volunteering
150+ hrs ortho shadowing
2 years working in a dental office
Background in metal fabrication in the offroad industry
Various hobbies / interests (bmx racing, DJing, fishing, desert racing, automotive/boat mechanics, etc)

As of today:
Applied to 24 schools
5 interviews (UMN, UCSF, UOP, UNLV, Columbia --> last 3 I didn't have yet)
2 acceptances (UCSF and UMN with a scholarship offer)
6 rejections
13 no response yet

I was very discouraged applying with a sub-3.0 but was blessed to get accepted and to my #1 school at that! I think it's important to show interest in the schools and have a fairly well-rounded application to make up for any discrepancies. There have been schools that basically threw my app in the trash until I called and spoke to them about my GPA, I'm sure that's the issue with most of those that I didn't even bother calling. Good luck to anyone reading this, keep working hard and it will surely pay off!

Just throwing out my stats for reference because my GPA is garbage.

Just received my 4th interview - DAT scores AA 22/ TS 21/ PAT24; ogpa 3.17 sgpa 3.0
SIU (withdrew), Tufts (accepted), UoP (feb), Indiana (feb) - not a URM. It's not impossible for us to overcome it - didn't do an official post bac just took upper level classes for a year to improve my gpa

oops, already replied to this thread.

3.3 overall GPA
3.2 sci GPA
19 AA/TS and 17 on PAT

Got into NYU in December and waitlisted at two schools. I almost didn't apply this cycle because I thought my stats were too low.

Congrats!

Accepted to 1 school, applied late. Awaiting to hear something from around 10 schools.

~2.98 sci, 3.32 overall
18 AA on DAT

pretty low, I'm surprised but not complaining 👍

WOW WHERE DID YOU GET ACCEPTED. my stats are really low!! and i applied really late

Congrats on UDM!! I also received an acceptance today and I couldnt be happier. Its a great school. You are spot on about networking, it is sooooo VALUABLE!!! Visit the school, talk with students, get your name and face out there and great things will come I promise.

Yup Network... dont be a number make sure they remember you when you call ore show up!

Hello. Would you please be so kind and tell me where you are doing your 1 year masters?
The very few schools I have found are Tulane and Loyola University. But Loyola has a 1 year masters only pre-Med School.

Thank you

People who are accepted should really indicate whether they're a URM or not in their posts. Otherwise, some non-URM applicant is going to see this thread and think they have a chance with a 3.0 and 17 on the DAT.

Forgive me for asking a stupid question, but I am new to this site. What is URM and why does it seem to allow people w/ lower stats to get accepted to dental school? I ask because I have lower stats, but don't know if I am URM.

URM stands for under represented minority. The general consensus is that being a URM makes admission to some schools easier.

You are a URM if you are essentially any minority race other than Asian.

wow... sometimes I can feel the pent-up hatred. 😍
so begins... the battle.

~3.5 GPA
DAT: 18

No community service/shadowing/extra curricular

I got into Howard, Temple, and MidW IL.

I like to think I'm just really charming. :3

Plus, I poured my little heart out onto my personal statement.

Last term some mexican guy told me his B+ was better than my A because he was hispanic; laughing about the idea that he will be given a competitive edge by being mexican. The irony of it all is that, as it turns out, he has lived an upper middle class life as his father and mother are both successful engineers paying for his education.

I hope that they control for the parents tax returns when deciding to give a URM a few exta points for their "challenges" they face in 2012. I think if I'm ever in a position of power I'll practice reverse-reverse-racism .
