I tried using the Search, didnt amount to much. Maybe I can get some help from you guys/gals. I'm a FL resident, but i'm applying to a some OOS schools.
Does anyone know which of these have a specific ties to the state question? I just dont want to end up spending the primary app money if I dont have any ties to that state. For those who have received these secondaries and dont mind answering, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks

(The ones with None dont have ties, thanks to those who have inputed....still need to verify the bolded ones)

The only one I know of is NYU and they do not have a ties to the state question.

I don't think anyone has received Mayo yet, but FL residents are considered "in-state" at Mayo (as are AZ and MN residents) because of the satellite Mayo clinic in Jacksonville.

I know WF, NYU, UR (no essay), and dart don't

By NYU, do you mean SUNY, NYMC, or Albany? Because NYU is not in that list.

awesome, not that i'll get into Mayo, but thats great.

Thanks.

Louisville asks you why you're interested in the school if you're out of state, but they don't specifically ask for your ties. EVMS and VCU don't ask you anything about being out of state.

...to add to everyone else's, these schools dont ask (at least not in the secondary, maybe at an interview): albany, creighton, loyola, rosalind, and cincinnati.

NYMC doesn't ask about ties; nor does SUNY Upstate.

A note on Louisville: while their secondary only asks why you want to go to their school - deep down - they're looking for ties. KY has a massive physician shortage and their schools are looking to educate people who are going to stay in Kentucky. If you can't explain why you want to go to school their and why you would want to stay their to practice - I would take them off your list.

Nebraska, whether their secondary application asks about it or not is irrelevant - they prefer instaters: "Strong preference is given to Nebraska residents, but a limited number of applicants from other states may be accepted. The University of Nebraska encourages, in particular, applicants from rural areas, small towns, or disadvantaged backgrounds to apply." According to their website last year 807 OOSers applied while 17 were accepted. Where as 294 residents applied and 104 were accepted. Your chances are not good there - drop it.

Frankly you're looking at the wrong thing. What they ask on the secondary is pretty irrelevant. Some won't ask but if you don't indicate ties in your essays they'll drop you. Get an MSAR and look at the numbers - those are the most useful in seeing if you have a shot at an OOS school.

...oh yeah, these 5 schools plus evms and VCU have a 'significant' number of OOS matriculants. Sorry I dont have the numbers for you, I saw them all in the MSAR but didnt make note 🙄

I don't recall SLU asking anything about state ties.

Sorry, I misread the list. It was late, and I had just blitzed through 3 hours of secondary essay writing.

I noticed this after someone mentioned an OOS essay. I'm sure its an indirect way of asking for ties. If I decide to apply there, I will definitely find a way to make Louisville "specific" for my "needs/goals." I'm not sure if I will end up applying here. Though their 3-1 interview/acceptance ratio for OOS is pretty good.

- Disadvantaged background
and while they are selective towards instaters, they interviewed 95 OOS and 21 of those matriculated. Meaning if you get an interview, you have a 5-1 chance, and at $45 for the secondary, I don't mind taking that chance. Plus their stats a little lower than alot of schools.

I have an MSAR, I was just looking for schools that I may reconsider applying to. After I saw SUNY Downstate had a specific ties essay, I wanted to make sure no others had this. Thanks for the advice. I can post the complete list of schools which I am applying to if you want to give me advice on those.

No prob. Thanks for the input! Good luck this cycle.

$45 for the secondary plus the travel cost to go to the school for a 20% chance of acceptance in the remote chance that you get an interview? Sounds like a great deal to me...
