I've unsuccessfully searched the forum for this topic using multiple word combinations. If someone has a link could you please post it? If not:

After several decades of successful practice (no lawsuits, frequently requested by name by co-workers, surgeons, and OR staff for their own family member's surgery) what's a "no big deal" amount of time away from clinical anesthesia practice for career intermission? This is for taking care of elderly parents, etc, (not for drug rehab), and then returning to practice as if you'd never been away. How much more time is ~OK, although it might get a raised eyebrow and require a thorough explanation? How much time is the line in the sand, absent some sort of refresher or monitored practice?

As my mother's oldest child and holding her power of attorney, I'm staring at this scenario as my mother approaches her mid-80s and is beginning to decline. Her own mother's decline was prolonged.

Thanks.

Can't you just work part time or some type of day shift job without call and hire home help for your Mom?

I've thought along those lines, but I'm also contingency planning for other scenarios and trying to envision the worst-case. Let's just say my family of origin dynamics are complicated and convoluted, as are expectations of me.

I don't think there is a "line in the sand". It's individually applied. In others words, only you know what is appropriate and what isn't.

I can tell you this..

It depends on how desperate a said practice or location needs you.

If they are desperate 3 years without clinical activity.. is fine

If they are NOT desperate I think it is ok for you to be gone for easily over a year or maybe even 2 if you are not a problem child.

IF you are going to be gone though for sometime, I would find an academic place that allows you to come to their grand rounds every so often and sign in so you can put that on your cv that you participated. And have the chairman corroborate this as a reference.

That way you can do whatever you wanna be doing but for 1-2 hours per week or month you can go to grandrounds.

IF you wanna talk to someone about it, find an experienced credentialer and /or locum agent who deals with these things on a daily basis. Dont talk to any old locum agency though. There are very few recruiters that are trustworthy. The others are scum of the earth shady.

I think it's a 2 part question.

1) How long off will you still feel safe and qualified coming right back?
2) How long away will you be able to clinically jump back in according to credentialing at your hospital?

At our hospital if you've been out of practice longer than 12 months you need to be proctored for a certain period of time to be able to get fully credentialed as well as jump through some minor hoops to explain why you were not in practice.

Is it possible for you to find some sort of part time arrangement where you maybe work 1 day a week just to stay fresh?
