time commitment in dental school

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it depends on your school's exam schedule. if you have exam blocks in which you have 3-5 exams in one week while the other three weeks of the month you don't have any, then that may be very different than if you have one exam every week. if you have blocks then you don't really have to do all that much, just keep up and prepare for quizzes during the first two weeks, then the week before and during exams you have to put in much more time. I'd say during the off weeks you'd put in about 0-1 hr/night and week before exams probably 1-2 hr/night and then on the two weekends before, put in full days. but, yes, there is definitely time to not be studying.

How much time do you invest per a day in studying for D school? Is studying done all day everyday and every night, or is there down time available?

Your status says you're a dental student, so shouldn't you know? 😀

But in all honestly, do a quick search because the topic has been brought up numerous times (several by me). You'll get answers ranging from an hour, if that, of studying (and rallying for the examination(s)) to those that dedicated 5 or so hours a day. It varies on what you goals are and where you want to stand in the class.

DrREO,

Incoming dental student here. I was excited after getting acceptance, so I changed my status. 😎 Thanks for the info.
(I am having second thoughts about HPSP)

go to Case haha. Our first semester we had 3 half days and plenty of free time. it was easier than undergrad. second semester was the same for about 2 months then it was crazy busy. 3rd semester also crazy busy (but my wife works 15 hrs/wk, evenings and i had to baby sit = no study time). 4th semester there have been weeks where i got home around 5 and studied for about 4-5 hours, but not every single day.

Case is awesome. Good education and still time outside of school, plus 3 mo off in summer after 1st year. I'm not going for specializing, I'm prolly in the middle of the class grade-wise. I got a 85 on boards which was maybe slighty above average for our class and about 7 or so points above national average (our whole class i think scored above national average). It's just expensive. I have friends who go 8-5 everyday then study all night. that would suck.

The time commitment is different at every school and different for each semester and for each individual.

I feel like I don't have time to sleep this semester but didn't think the previous two were bad at all. Mainly, it's because we have way more lab work and practicals this semester than we've had in the past and I have to practice more to get the same results as some of my classmates that are naturally good at it. I'm sure you could find someone in my class that doesn't practice and gets everything right the first time that thinks this semester is a breeze.
