Time for Neurology Interview Invitations?

I am applying for Neurology. My application was turned in very early October. At this point, after one week in November, I still have many programs that I have not heard from. Am I running out of time for interview invitations? Should I be doing anything at this point or should I just be patient and wait? Thank you.

Its tough to say and every application is unique, but maybe some of the programs you haven't heard from are waiting for a dean's letter which was just released on Nov 1st. I would give it 1 more week. If you haven't heard from the schools and you've checked ERAS status and all of your documents are uploaded, sent to programs, and downloaded by the programs, don't be afraid to give the coordinator a call to check the status of your application review. hey buddy, i received 20 out of my 30 interviews in Sept. 10 in Oct and 0 in Nov....just 2 rejections thus far in Nov.

I would be freaked out if i had no iv as of now....if you dont hear nothing by mid next week..you should start calling people..IMO

Coffeeaddict: Thank you for your reply. I am sure that there are at least few applicants in my boat out there. I am waiting for 15 more programs to respond. They all have downloaded all the documents including the dean's letter. One problem was that some of my recommendation letters didn't come in until the second half of october to late october.

Is no news considered good news in this case?

An attending physician told me that it is annoying to call programs and he added a note saying to imagine that 100 applicants call the program coordinator to ask about their status... Considering that they are busy these days, it seems like it would be annoying. I don't know. At the same time, I don't want to miss an interview that I could have got by calling.

sleepingneuro: Thanks for your reply as well. Wow, it seems like you are doing wonderful that you are getting 30 interviews and only couple of rejections. It will cost you alot of $$$$$ to go to all these.😉... I didn't know that we should apply to soooooooo many programs like you are doing for a neurology residency. Maybe your way is the smart way to do it. It is certainly the safer way. You are making me wonder if I should apply for more programs at this point. I got total of 3 interviews, so far.

I will not interview at 30 programs!!! I wish I had the funds and energy to do it tough. I have scheduled 15 interviews and have cancel/rejected 10. Oh, and trust me, I have my share of rejections…what I meant was that my application has been stagnant in Nov…2 rejections this month.

I would definantly apply for more programs if I were you.

I only got 1 interview (by phone call) this month, and I am waiting on 3 very important programs to get back to me. I will probably start harassing pretty soon.

I would send an email to the PD of the programs you want to interview stating your interest and hope the feeling is mutual.

I know this is only anecdotal, I had a classmate in med school do this with programs she had not yet heard from by early Dec and had a very good response rate with interviews. I think like 6/8 she was waiting on invited her.

There are several programs that started late (at least one because they were pre-occupied with preparations for an ACGME re-accreditation committee visit) and only began sending out interview invitations within the past 2 weeks.

Anyone have any insight about the odds of getting into a program if you are a late invite they sent out after others canceled (i.e. late January interviews).

It might suggest that they weren't wowed by your initial application. Is it possible to make up that much ground based on the interview alone?

It would be cool if someone had an example of that happening to them or someone they knew.

Once you're offered an interview, everything becomes something of a clean slate. Most places will hold a meeting immediately following a particular day's interviews, to informally rank the candidates and compare them with candidates that had interviewed earlier in the season.

During those sessions, its often the people that had interviewed most recently that are thought of the most (since they are still fresh in their memory banks). Anyhow, I have met MANY last-minute interview add-ons that eventually matched at said residency.

That is good to hear. If people take the time to visit they should have a legit shot of matching at said program.

I think some would disagree with you though about Nov vs Jan interviews. Some programs have done studies to see who they get based on when they interviewed, and most say it's a wash. Programs and the applicants are more energized and less burned out early in the process and late in the process like you said they have met the applicants most recently.

Several of the programs I visited only have one or zero January dates because many applicants get worn out and end up canceling most of their late interviews.
