Time limit on when to take Step I?

I am a DO and I didnt take step 1 after my 2nd year of medical school. Now I am beginning to think that taking it and studying very hard with a great score will help me out a lot, especially since I am only an average student with an average COMLEX score. Getting an above average step might help me win out. My question is, now that I am in my 3rd year on clinicals is it a bad idea or is it even possible to register for Step I and take it during my third year. I find that I actually have more free time now as a third year than I didnt second year. Is someone who takes Step I this late looked down upon in the application process??..or is it all just looked at the same no matter when you take it? Does it look bad that I take step 1 and 4 months later I am taking step 2?
