That's a very interesting article. I on the other hand will be the first MD in my family and if I thought medicine was going to bring me grief and misery then I'm smart enough (I have my moments) it not go into to. I don't think parents could force you to go into something you're not going to like; I would hope that no parent wants his or her kids to be unhappy.

Yup.

And as a side note, the number of doctors I've met who, on hearing I am applying to med school, say, "don't do it!" is rather shocking... convincing them that I should in fact do it despite their disillusionment has been great practice for interviews!

and yeah, op, you don't sound like a troll, the article is worth looking at but what i mostly got out of it was this doctor letting us know about how he is a professor at columbia, has a private practice and has a smart daughter that is most likely to become a doctor too, obviously, thats not his only point.... again the coffeee.

Perhaps had I been born into a well-off and educated family, I would have known about all the possibilities and had some good modern guidance- but I come from the background that Dr. Haig describes - upwardly mobile immigrant family, and I just never knew about anything else other than: teaching, medicine, law, dentistry.

I didn't know that professional trades could pull in over 100K. I didn't know anything about commerce or MBA's. I had no guidance whatsoever, and I still don't have any guidance when it comes to medicine - other than what I read on SDN or through word of mouth. It's kinda too late now, seeing as how I've come this far - but articles like this make me think again, maybe I shouldn't go into medicine afterall??

no youre not a troll. its a good article-to me it sounds like its geared more towards sons/daughters of physicians who should really evaluate their decision to enter medicine since they grow up with the "my mom/dad is a doctor" syndrome that sometimes skews their perception of medicine. being the first one to hopefully be a doc in my family, the article defs makes it clear that theres a lot of red tape in the profession and you have to be ready to deal with it.

Anyways, this article is good, i liked it and I believe this article though is geared towards a specific group of people like the son's and daughter's of physician's. Basically he is saying that he does not want his daughter to got throught the same crap he did, and that this is an agreable topic among other Doctor's in society......... Which I as well believe that this could be some of us in about 15yrs sayng this to our kids.... ahhhh, who knows..😛
