To all the reisdents and attendings on the board,

I have a bit of a dilemma. My sister scheduled her wedding for July 1st (a Friday). I plan on starting my residency around that time. Is it really going to make me look bad if I ask for the day off? Will most programs even excuse me from a day of orientation, or quite possibly my FIRST day of residency? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Most ACGME programs start on July 1st regardless of which weekday that may fall on. There may be some exceptions to this. Most have 4 or 5 days of orientation prior to the July 1st start.

We use a block scheduling system at my program and there are always 2-3 residents in each year on vacation at a time, during every 2 week interval throughout the year.....except for the first two weeks of residency. That is just a policy our program has, but I know some people have gotten around it on an individual basis. There are always going to be residents on vacation as they rotate through each ward/unit, but they may or may not do this the first two weeks since everyone is new.

Basically, you will have to ask your chiefs. Unfortunately, you don't know where you are going yet. Is her July 1st date set in stone? Deposits paid?

I know it's hard to not have the answer to this question, but you won't know until you ask. And, you can't ask until you Match. If there's any way your sister could move her date up a week, or even back 3-4 weeks, that would probably help you a great deal. But, I know how weddings are.

I would think a reasonable program would help you be there at least for the day of the wedding. I recall a couple of people starting our year started a couple of weeks or a month late for one reason or another. You may have to make some sacrifices to make this happen, such as being on vacation your first week of residency and not having that downtime off later in the year.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice guys! I really appreciate it.
