Hello everyone! I am looking for any advice, insight, and/or experience...

I recently matched, but have a timing conflict. I just learned that orientation starts several weeks prior to the first intern day. However, I will not be done with graduation requirements before the start of orientation and, thus, will be absent from orientation. The timing conflict stems from when I took a medical leave of absence for an persistent allergic reaction late in interview season.

Long story short, I developed a chronic issue involving urticaria of the entire body including head and neck. Quite embarrassing and uncomfortable requiring about 6 weeks of leave. It has now resolved and I can control the symptoms with meds if it ever resurfaces again. Unfortunately, I still do not know the trigger of the reaction.

Basically, I matched, but now I'm very concerned that this could be voided since I have this conflict. I did not disclose this to anyone yet, except for people at my college. This is because of the fact that I had been informed that it would be appropriate for me to participate in the match given that I would be able to satisfy my graduation requirements prior to the first day of intern year. Now, I realize that we have orientation for several weeks prior to the first day....

Thanks in advance.

It may be easier for your school to resolve that issue. They might make you do an elective that does not require you to be physically at a place. Talk to you school first to see if they can do something because it might be difficult for the program that you matched to provide some kind of accommodation...

I'll have your problem as well (maybe if the orientation happens early) since I also have rotations that go past the rest of my class in 1.5 years.

What I was planning to do was ask my school if there was an online elective that I could do and if no. I would pick a rotation that was near the residency program and get with my school about vacation days or ask the attending for time off since it's for orientation.

Agree with trying the school first, but I don't believe the hospital can do anything about you missing a orientation that is before your official 'start date.' The match contract doesn't start till Jul 1st correct? I would think if that is what it says, than that is when you would be in violation by not showing up. But I would do everything I can to smooth over tho.

This is not a big deal.
People miss orientation all the time. Programs starting earlier and earlier is getting ridiculous. I would let your program know and they will guide you.

With that being said, if you can get your med school requirements done a week or 2 earlier I'd also try for that just to give yourself some breathing room before starting residency.

This. Its a pretty common occurrence. Don't worry about it, but I would notify the place where you matched that you may miss some of orientation due to final rotation requirements in June. I would do as AMEHigh says though, and see if you can finish the requirements earlier. Its always better to get there for orientation, meet people, make a first impression, get all the random requirements out of the way, etc. if you can.

Really though, this is a very common problem people have. The match requires you to be able to start on July 1st. With programs requiring people to come in the middle of June, they have to accommodate people that simply can't do that. They would be violating the match if they didn't take you because of something like this. You're fine. You're not the first one this happens to and you're not going to be the last one. Most of the time they just figure out a way for you to do the essential orientation stuff out of order or when you arrive.

The time to talk to them about it is now though, so that you can plan ahead.
