Right now, I am a junior in undergrad. I am premed. My girlfriend is a senior, and will be entering a sociology phd program next year. Average time is about 5 years to finish the PhD.

This means that either she takes a year off, and we enter school at the same time, so we can be in the same city, but then I match a year(or more) before she finishes her phd, or she goes next year, and I try as hard as possible to get into a med school in the same city, and then match at the same time (she hopefully) graduates.

Has anyone had a similar situation? Any advice?

You can try to get in a med school near her program. My fiance got into a med school 45 min away from my pharm school and we're getting married this summer. He'll be an M1, I'll be a P3. Otherwise you two are going to be apart for a loong time. Two of my classmates don't live with their long distance husbands. It doesnt look fun. If you're meant to be together, you'll get in somewhere close or will be able to keep it together for the next 5. Hope it works out for you!

There's no guarantee that either of you will get into schools in the same city regardless of application time. Additionally, there's no guarantee that either of you will graduate in the timetable you specify as well. So you either apply to schools you want to attend when you're both ready or you try to gamble on being accepted to schools near each other. What you really need to decide, is that if you go the latter route and your plan doesn't work out will you be bitter that you gave up a chance to go to school A vs school B? Live in city A vs city B? Will she feel bitter? I think it's better think through these types of things now, rather than be surprised later. I hope things work out for the both of you. I really do! 🙂

This forum has about a billion posts on long-distance relationships if you want to peruse them, though.
