I'm a tad confused.

You get your pre-med. Take the MCAT. Apply to Med School, via the clearing house (AMCAS etc.). What year do applicants matriculate? What is the standard waiting period from course completion to MS1?

The 2012 thread casued my confusion. Seems like 2012 is quite a while to wait for med school, or is that the graduating class?

Thanks,

JB

2012 means class of.

Some very organized kids are ready to apply to med school at the end of their very traditional junior year in college, so they spend their senior year interviewing and hopefully graduating. And then they matriculate immediately after college.

The rest of us apply when we're ready. If you apply summer '08, you matriculate fall '09.

Gotcha,

Thanks for the calrification!

Okay... So then here is a scenario:

I have a BA in Communications and I've spent the past year (and this upcoming academic year) in doing the pre-reqs (Bio, Chem, Orgo, and Physics) so that I can take the MCAT.

I'll finish those courses next May, which is when I'm assuming I'll be able to take my first MCAT exam. Assuming I do well, I can apply, but from my understanding, the earliest I would be able to matriculate is the fall of 2010 because of my timing...

Is this correct?

Correct. You can apply with some unfinished prereqs in process, but without that MCAT score there's no point.

Also, what's with "first" MCAT exam? Plan on taking it once. Look on AAMC for the stats on how people don't get better scores on retakes. Point is, don't take the test until you're consistently scoring better than your goal on practice exams.

Best of luck to you.
