I haven't flown in a plain since I was eight years old. This week, I'm flying off to my first long-distance interview. Got any tips for someone who has never flown alone ?

You're not alone, brother/sister! I'm flying for the first time by myself in 2 days! Remember all liquids must be in containers no bigger than 3.4oz and all liquids must be carried in a CLEAR 1 quart ziploc bag, or zipper bag thingy.

Just relax flying is awesome! Chew some gum so that your ears will adjust to altitude change and bring something to waste time because it can get a little uncomfortable (I fly every weekend... sometimes 8 times a weekend... ok I'm a skydiver..)

Allow enough time for the security check and take noise canceling headphones

bring your personal statement to read on the plane

Sleeping pills to knock yourself out if you get overly nervous/anxious.

Bring a sandwich or two, seriously. You don't get fed on domestic flights unless you want to pay $15 for a horrible tasting sandwich. So bring food with you for the flight. You'll have to buy water at the airport, but at least you won't also be spending $20 on crappy food.

You can bring an empty water bottle to fill up at the airport. I'd pack everything in a carryon so you don't have to pay money to check bags. Bring some reading material or an ipod for flight entertainment. Relax 🙂

Arrive early so you don't stress going through security. You need to remove your shoes so wear something that is easy to take off/put on. Any belts will have to come off or any heavy jewelry, car keys, etc. You can load your boarding pass on your phone so get the app for whatever airline you are flying. They will also text you updates about your flight so that's handy. Check your flight status before you leave for the airport. Carry on bag sizes are smaller now so double check that, but if you are going just for a day or two, you should be able to get everything in a small rolling bag and a backpack and not have to worry.

Check in online 24 hours before your flight so you can just go to the security line at the airport and won't have to go to the check-in line. Know the sizes for carry-ons or you will have to check, and pay for, your bags. Smaller is better!! Tag your bags just in case. Sometimes some jerks on flight will put their bags in compartments not by your seat and you may end up having to gate-check your bags. Sign up for the frequent flier club so you earn miles for your flights.

Bring food or snacks. The empty water bottle idea is great since water in the airports can cost $3 or $4 for a bottle.

Planes have a small closet where you can hang your suit in a garment bag... wish I knew that before I forced my suit into my carry-on. Nearly all hotels have an ironing board so you're good either way when it comes down to it.
