Freshman and scared. 3.15 gpa and 3.5 sgpa.

I need tips for gen chem2 and intro bio1 and how to improve my study habits. My bio syllabus states in big bold letters that the midterms will be HARD and that rumors are that it is a weed-out class. I will use the campbell biology 9th edition (10th ed recommended but 9th is fine).

Chem 1: I barely squeezed out an A- because of my teacher's incredible curve (87.5 = A-) but chem 2 scares me with all this electrochem and acid/base mumbo jumbo. so any key points on any of the harder chem 2 chapters would help. same with bio

overall, the general consensus at my school about the bio department is that it sucks, so help appreciated.

tips:
-study/review frequently, don't cram
-make sure you understand the conceptual basis of things, don't just get used to plugging in/using equations; at my school, this is what weeded out people in chemistry and physics
-ask for help outside of class; go to office hours frequently, talk to the prof/TA before and after class
-study with other people and take turns explaining things to each other; I used to think I knew things and then I would try to explain it to someone and was like 😵
-learn to utilize your time wisely, find efficient study methods
-work hard, don't give up

EDIT: + coffee, it will soothe your soul

There's no way around weed courses. They work as intended.

That said, while they are challenging, biology is about 99% memorization (read: studying).

I've said it a million times, but I'll say it again: GPA is about time spent studying and work ethic. It has almost nothing to do with baseline intelligence. Put in the work, get the A.

BIO 2 is more memorization than BIO 1 IMO so make sure you look over material when you learn it and keep it fresh in your head up until the tests
