Tips for cancelling interview/withdrawing app politely

Hey all,
A couple questions...

1) Any tips for cancelling an interview?

2) Is it worth withdrawing an application to a school that hasn't offered you an interview yet if you already have an option you'd like to attend more? Not sure if it's more polite to withdraw pre-II and possibly give them more time to review other people's applications or if it's better just not to send anything and then turn down any potential II (or just get rejected 🙄). Thoughts?

I emailed the school with something along the lines of:

Thank you for the opportunity to interview at < >, however due to a change in circumstances from when I scheduled my interview I will no longer be able to attend. I am emailing to withdraw my application and decline my interview invite. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and I thank you for any time you spent reviewing my application and scheduling my interview.

If you absolutely would not attend a school that is still reviewing your application than I would say go ahead and withdraw. Remember though that there is the possibility(if you don't withdraw) that you will get the interview invite, attend and fall in love with the school(or want to attend more than your current acceptance for one reason or another). If you are ok with this possibility or it is extremely unlikely, then by all means withdraw.

Not to derail the thread but it was rough. About half way in I was broken and tired from traveling and I think I got worse and worse at interviewing(sadly). Oh also I got sick right before Yale/Havard(probably from traveling and not sleeping) and did something to my foot so I was unable to walk. Obviously I can't really complain though. 2 more to go...2 more!

That must have cost you so much $$$$$. I did 3 interviews, two of which I could drive to and didn't need hotels. My entire process cost ~$1000... wow
