Dear GI world,

As all of you know matching in GI is very hard. The question is what should we do to be the best fellow possible in July??

What would you have done before starting your fellowship and why?

Thank you to all of you.

DO:
Get your IM board study out of the way. This is an unnecessary distraction as you re-learn a new field.

Get your credentialing/ paperwork etc out of the way- another unnecessary distraction

Get your moving/ living/ significant other/ childcare/ financial situation sorted now so you spend no time on this

If you have the option of doing a GI consult rotation do this and challenge yourself as if you are the fellow.

You've matched. Sit with your family/ SO and decide what you really want for your life and plan for fellowship whilst keeping an open mind.

Rest, exercise, relax, volunteer, spend time with your family.

If you are really gung-ho about this, reach out to research mentors and get that process started, but know you need to focus elsewhere initially.

DONT DO:
Don't try to read/ learn all the guidelines- you have years to do this, it will come when time.
Don't try to learn endoscopy- there is nothing you will add now that will give you a head start.
Don't neglect or fail to enjoy the time you have left on IM or the opportunities to learn.
Don't be worried about job offers and salary- there's plenty of time, and everyone you ask will be annoyed

I didn't do **** before starting. Enjoy life as much as you can.

Agree with all of the above. You’ll have your whole life to learn GI. Find a hobby for now.
