If I attend an international medical school, can I someday practice in the U.S.?
Yes. But there are a few steps you’ll have to take. First, you’ll want to contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), which will assess if your transcript meets the proper requirements to apply for ECFMG certification. (This is required before international medical graduates can enter a residency program, take step three of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), and obtain an unrestricted medical license.) Only graduates from certain international programs qualify to apply for ECFMG certification. You can find out which schools qualify by searching the World Directory of Medical Schools’ database. And you can apply on the ECFMG website.
Regardless of your experience abroad, you will have to complete an accredited three-year residency program in the U.S. or Canada, according to the American Medical Association. You’ll also need to obtain a visa that permits medical training and apply for a license in the state where you intend to practice.
