Tips for those classes that are mostly lecture based but no resources for the lectures? All I have is the notes and I'm clueless how to deepen my basic knowledge. I went from getting severely below average grades (30's but dropped) to average, but I feel like I'm just getting lucky since all the quizzes and exams are hard for me.

Ask the prof if you can record the lecture. Bring in outside material based upon what the lecture is about. Ask people who have already passed the course (preferably with a higher grade than yourself) what they did.

Thanks, what do you use? I tried using my laptop, didn't hear a thing.

I just use the voice memo app on my iPhone... Works well for me 🙂

Concur that this works well, but some professors do not like you having your phone out. Remember, ALWAYS ASK FIRST.

I bought a personal recorder. It cost roughly $20 and was arguably one of the best investments I have made this year.

Voice recorder saved me in biochemistry. It really is a great investment

Agreed. I've gotten to the point where most of my professors know me (small school) so I get away with this kind of stuff without thinking about it haha.

Textbook, but I'm one of those people who read pretty much every textbook cover to cover and did most of the review questions in them.
Me too, but lectures don't really keep with the book. It's kind of annoying because I am a book person, but oh well.

For classes where the material much more closely followed the notes or there was no text, and made sure I knew the notes inside and out. Not just memorizing them, but having a strong conceptual understanding so that I could apply concepts to things or ideas beyond what was presented or the prof used as an example. This essentially required constantly going over notes thinking about them (not just memorizing) and exploring things I found interesting or wasn't 100% on.

Except your english classes ;-)

Lol. I see what you did there; and I tend to be somewhat anal about grammar and spelling on here. I actually did fine in all of my comp and comm classes with almost no effort. I blame autocorrect on my phone for this one....

FWIW, no one cares unless you are bragging or humble bragging haha.

Check yoself before you wreck yoself come application season... Unintentional strong humble brags can come across undesirably to adcoms

Welp, thankfully I'm done with that crap #yeahthisisprettymuchsomewhatofahumblebrag

Since bio I I've recorded every lecture in every class where the prof would allow it.
