I have been tasked with writing a report on a small conference that is being held at my university on a subject area with which I am not all that familiar. The "article" will be published in the academic society's annual magazine, so it does not need to be strictly academic. Has anyone ever done this? Does anyone have any advice? I've been told by the editor that I'll be able to interview the presenters in my own time following the conference. Does anyone have ideas for questions I should ask them or general guidelines for the interviews? I've never done something like this.

If previous issues of the annual magazine include similar write-ups, it would be useful to go back and look at some previous examples. But it also sounds like you need more guidance from the editor about the structure and content of the article.
