Congrats to everyone!!! For those of you still waiting, all of my friends got into Baylor last year from March all the way to July!! One guy even has his application for this cycle filled out already! If you haven't gotten anything don't sweat it....there is still hope.

PS: my friends that got in after dec. 1 were all 20+ DAT scores and 3.3+ gpa's....the "diversity" of the class, as with any school, has LOTS to do with it, if you know what I mean.:xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf:

OG : 3.38 SciGPA: 3.34 with good amount ECs. Less than 100 hr shadowing.

with those DAT scores, i think you will get a second round acceptance at the very least...maybe you didn't do so hot at your interviews...good luck!

well talking part went great. it could be the one page philosophy that we had to write.

I feel so heartbroken right now. I didn't think I would be this affected by not hearing anything, but I'm really down in the dumps.

What do you guys mean by second round of acceptances? Aren't those for people who interview post Dec 1st... I don't see why in February any school would accept me when I've interviewed with them in October, they could have done it now.

I'm just confused. But congratulations to all of you, I know you all worked your butts off to get here and I'm so happy for you.

Don't worry, TexanGal...the people I mentioned in my previous posts were all pre Dec.1 interviews. Don't lose hope until you get that rejection letter!!!

Thanks for the hope =) You said your friends added to the "diversity" though haha, I'm not sure if I fall under that category.

BTW, I am REALLY happy for you! I see you've applied before, way to be persistent and get what you want. You deserve it, enjoy every second! 🙂

Hang in there guys, I know its hard at this point, but things happen and sometimes luck runs your way. I applied twice before I got in, and some of my other friends on here have gone through the cycle three or more times. At first the thought of reapplying sucked. I just found out what was wrong with my app, retook my DATs and got in the second time. In the mean time I got to travel and not worry about school for an entire year, which I think was a blessing in disguise. Relax, it's not over until you decide its over. Give it another go, as hard as it may be.

third time with huge improvement on dat but still. Hopefully i ll be in somewhere.

TexanGal... i know how you feel and it sucks. But some people will choose to go to other schools opening more spots, so there is still little hope us.

Yea...its the key to this Dental School game. Do everything you can, even if it takes making friends with the admissions office people. As far as the "diversity" goes, what I meant was that my friends that got in way later had amazing credentials (one had a 24AA!!), but because the class has to be of a certain makeup, they got screwed bc the group they represent contains some people with crazy high credentials. Hope this is making sense btw haha

Has anyone gotten a phone call from UTHSCSA? I missed a call and got a voicemail. I called back but the person who called (Dr. Segura) wasn't in so I'm waiting to hear again. I already got an acceptance email this morning. Hopefully they're not taking it away from me :scared:

It might be a scholarship offer... I got a phone call when I was accepted, and that's what it was for. But who knows! Congrats! Hope to see you around next year.

Got a yes from UTDB, no word from the other schools. Pretty shocked about silence from Baylor after how well my interview seemed to go.

It's okay to be disappointed or sad about the situation.

I did have friends who were accepted Post Dec with Pre Dec interviews.

You're not out until you get a rejection letter! I actually got rejected the last cycle in July/August and in the same week got an interview for this cycle. Remain positive and persistent. I was in your spot last year and this year I managed to get accepted! You really have to find out what's wrong and work on it. Be positive!

Ok I just wanted to pass this on since I'm now recovering from Dec. 1st. I emailed Janet Pledger at Baylor and she told me that they usually send out another round of acceptances towards the end of January. Then they make the alternate list in March and obviously if you're on that, you still have a chance.

Basically there is still hope to all of us that were really counting on Baylor! Let's try to stay positive and hope for the best but plan for the worst!

I called and asked why I didn't get an interview at Baylor and they told me I don't have recent coursework. I graduated in may 2008 (bio). So that's something to keep in mind when planning what you will do if you don't get in this cycle. I was very surprised to hear they wanted you to basically be in school while you are applying. I had been out not even one year when I submitted my application. you can call the schools and ask what you can do to improve for the ones you didn't get interviews at.

Thank you for updating on Baylor! Hopefully, we'll hear some good news in January! :xf:

Does anyone know if San Antonio does something similar to that? Like we should know if we are on waitlist by the end of January?
That sucks, because you have to start putting down deposits for some schools in mid-january. SA's still my top choice. =/

It sounds like the person at the other end of the line made up the first excuse that came to mind. You seriously don't believe that any ds would pass up on an otherwise competitive applicant simply because he/she decided not to apply while "still in school".

well I may have extrapolated the idea a little far to include applying while in school. But she was very certain that it was the primary reason why I didn't interview. Which kinda sucks because I work 8-5 so how am I suppose to take classes at the university in my town (UT). I guess there community college but that seems rather pointless to me.

oh k that could be one reason I didnt receive an interview offer from them. I am also out of school since May 08.

Just got an interview invite from UTDB on my graduation day... lol. AH.

Actually, that is basically what Dr. Miller told me as well. I've been out of school since summer of 07.

Maybe Dr. M is trying to find a new reason for rejecting applicants. In the past she had used the standard not enough upper division bio courses justification. In spite of what she may have been saying, unless the class of 2010 is made up of 21 year old recent graduates the patent answer may remain suspect.

I want to try to take a class or two at a university, but work 8-5 and no university has science classes that start that late. I saw a couple at my community college like pathophysiology and ecology/evolutionary bio I could take after 5 though. So do you know if they want upper div science courses or if community college will do.

I find it absurd that despite getting a bio degree And aceing the dat in February that I might either have to quit my job and work in a restaurant in order to take a few classes as a nondegree seeking student, or have to postpone dental school till after I get a masters degree

Hey guys, sorry to hijack the thread, but if you're planning on attending UTHSCSA join the facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=229853588792
For those of you still waiting to hear back from UTHSCSA, only one person besides myself has joined the group which could mean a lot of people are turning down the acceptance. So keep your hopes up if you still haven't heard back. Good luck everyone!

Just got an interview invite from UTDB on my graduation day... lol. AH.

I thought you already had an interview with UTDB in October? Did you get a second interview or did you just get accepted?

What are the odds of getting all 3 pre-December interviews and not getting into one before February?

Probably much better than 1 pre-December interview in mid-November.

Upper division unfortunately. However, my impression was that they want to see a gapless transition into dental school, so i think taking good science courses regardless of level would be better than nothing. I'm in the same situation, I work full time cause I have to. In a way, I can see their reasoning, they don't want you to be shell-shocked when the heavy work load comes, but personally I think there's a benefit from being out for a while- not burning out. But whatever.

No! I had interviews at Baylor and UTHSCSA, never heard from Houston until two days ago. I had to reschedule my interview from December 14th to January 11th due to graduation conflicts... kinda nerve-wracking moving it a whole month away but it had to be done! I've been waiting to walk! lol.

Thanks for the congrats everyone... but we know my track record with interviews... haha.

Oh and for tose of you still waiting on an interview from Houston... I did email them December 2nd to ask what the status of my application was and they said it was "still under review", and then I get an email the next day. IDK if my email had anything to do with the interview invite... maybe I had to remind them I existed? lol

That makes no sense to me. For example, I'll be done with my degree this winter. If I don't get accepted, that will be a year and a half gap from school. I got the necessary prerequisites they want... but because I didn't get accepted the first time around, I have go to and put more money into classes I don't need just so that they feel like I can be okay in dental school? Study habits are study habits... I think we're all smart enough to know dental school = studying, even if we've been out of school for a while.

Not only it makes no sense, but it is pure, unadulterated nonsense.

does anyone know approximately the number of offers the schools give out on their second around of acceptances?

yes i do agree, but it sure seems like the case for lot of people on this forum including myself.

I had baylor interview last year on Sep 3, which was one of the earlier dates they had. Didn't get in.
Graduated this May, with increased GPA applied again. Didn't get the interview and called around November to see what is the status of my application, and Janet told me that they are still reviewing but there is note or comment on my file from ADCOM saying that I am currently not taking any more courses and it was sort of a red-flag although I have improved GPA, I am not showing enough effort b/c I am not enrolled in school.
She also highly recommended me to take Masters or Post-Bacc. so I can try again next year for class of 2015 if I don't hear back from them this year.

Luckily, I was smart enough to spend money on applying to Out-of-State dental schools instead of paying for tuition for classes which I have absolutely no interest / use of.

If anyone doesn't get in this year, I would highly advise you to consider applying to Out-of-state schools. It is not guaranteed that you will have interviews from same Texas schools again either (had 2 pre-dec last year but 0 pre-dec this year). I know Texas schools are very good and you can't beat the tuition, but I applied for military scholarship and tuition is no longer a factor b/c they pay for full tuition wherever you attend.

Best of luck to everyone who's still waiting for the good news!!

Lol trust me the writing has nothing to do with it. I wrote the most ******ed paper and got accepted. With your scores i'm almost certain you'll get a letter 2nd round of acceptance

I hope so. This is what I see today in my future a big ?. No clue what I ll do. I had worked my arse off for DAT but hopefully they liked my application overall. thanks for giving hope.

Is San Antonio your top pick?

Knowingly or unknowingly you stumbled on the key to the confusion. You and others were "red flagged" not because you there was a gap between your graduation and time of application, but rather because, as far as Baylor was concerned, your academic record left much to be desired and by your action and words were not willing to continue in either a post bac of Master's program to prove that you can handle upper division (bio) courses and, therefore, the rigors of ds. Year after year, adcoms find themselves receiving carbon copies of the application from the previous year(s) and, predictably, the applicants find themselves facing the same outcome.

That may be the case for lphiewok, but I am a first time applicant with a 3.61/3.62 GPA and 22/22/22 on the DAT, Bio major with extra upper div science courses. So I can testify that Baylor did indeed say they were concerned about the gap in my education. They didn't like the fact that I graduated in May 08 and didn't take anymore classes. So despite my GPA being above the average of their accepted status, she encouraged me to take a course or two each semester since I "hadn't had any coursework since May 2008" (said in a slightly shocked voice by Baylor person on the phone).

Although I will say I called San Antonio and they said that recent coursework is not something they looked for (the person on that end of the phone had a rather bewildered tone in response to my asking if it was something they were concerned about, something I could relate to).

By the way, does anyone know about what percentage of the class texas schools (besides Baylor, I hear they try to fill the whole class) are attempting to fill with Dec. 1st acceptances? 60% 80%?

You can keep on believing what you want, but excellent stats do not equate with universal acceptance nor is it an automatic ticket to ds admission. Other than the perfunctory justifications used by ds to explain away why an application was deemed unsatisfactory, you are unlikely to find a dean of admission or their spokesman telling you that they did not particularly like the font used in your ps.
