I second that comment! However, I wonder if the 22k living expenses is really necessary?? Could one cut that down to 10k?? I cant imagine spending 22k in one year...live like a student right?🙂

Have you ever lived on your own? Even if you are sharing an apartment say for $1000 a month you have already eaten up 6k in rent for the year. Then you add on utilities, cell phone, internet, food, gas, health and car insurance. It adds up extremely fast and thats not buying anything extra or going out and doing anything in what little free time you have. Keep in mind car maintenance and those unexpected expenses, I really don't think its overstated.Yes, im sure it can be reduced some but it really will surprise you.

Ouch, well I guess I'm used to living on the super cheap, and with parental help for car/health insurance, and cell phone..I currently live in an apt that is about 350 plus utilities, I just need everything to work, nothing fancy. I also dont have internet at my place, just bring my laptop to campus. And the necessity of a car is greatly dependent on where you decide to go to school, and if there are shuttles available.I currently dont drive in college either.....RSimon, are you planning on attending UTDB? A thousand seems to be a lot for sharing a place...

My wife and I live on about 1300 a month (635 for rent), which is less than 16k/yr.

Well I guess rent and living cost is definitely a regional thing and im going off of what my experience has been in the past. I am from(south east tx) and there is alot of demand because of all the chemical plants and contract work that comes through. Just 1 bedroom apartments run 550 on up and for anything decent they are 700-900 and most 2 bedroom apartments are 1000-1300(so split 500-650). I also ran into the same issue with housing around Baylor when I was going to work there this fall. I just couldn't make it work on what income I could generate and had to opt out of it for financial reasons. Cheap housing can be found but its usually in areas that are not the safest or are in pretty rough shape. I agree that it depends on where you live but typically anything close to the schools are high because of demand and convenience. I did have to drive to 20-30 miles a day to school and then for other running around so that was a factor for me. Regardless youll need one at some point so it never hurts to consider that extra expense.

But slm266 gave probably the best round about number of living cost to expect 16k or a little more for those unexpected bills. I think that 10k a year would be really scrapping by. Probably best to take a little extra out when getting loans so you dont come up short and have the extra finical stress while in school, you can always just not spend it 🙂

good luck peoples. give us a shout if ur comin down to UTHSCSA

zade

lol you are THE zadefaraj. i been using a combination of your worksheets plus some of my own for facilitating my organic chemistry II workshop classes the past 4 semesters! takes some of the workload off of me! thanks for the awesome website!

what are your stats if you don't mind me asking? I can't speak for SA and Baylor but what I've heard from my school (UTDB), competition is fierce this year....

good luck!

I have 3.6 overall, 3.4 sci gpa and 19 AA on dat.. some extracurricular activities, leadership position and shadowing :'(
i guess i need to start thinking about what to do next year after reapplying this coming summer...:scared::scared:
Congratulations to all of you guys on getting interviews! 👍👍

Interviewed at UTHSCSA yesterday. The school seemed nice, but the building looked old. However, the people there seemed motivated and were very honest in their responses to questions.

For all of the people still waiting to hear back, don't get freaked out. The only school that usually fills up before December is Baylor.

Actually, Baylor doesn't fill up before December. No school can since on most years (years with Dec 1st falling on weekend excluded) DEC 1st is the first day schools can notify applicants of accempances. Then, Baylor may send out acceptances letters for all available slots, but they do not fill up all the slots. There are still plenty of people who turn down slots. So, although the chances of getting in after Dec seem to be less if you are waiting to hear form them after Dec as compared to UTHSCSA and UTDB, there is still hope of getting into Baylor if you don't make the first round of acceptances.

So, I know that there is a deposit that is due when you get accepted into dental school, but I was wondering if anybody happens to know how much that is (for TX schools)? And/or when it would be due by?

Does the school send rejection letter to all students who will not be interviewed? I am just wondering since I still have not received anything from Baylor yet other than that they have received my application. So, there is still hope 😕

After they are done interviewing, around the beginning of january i suppose, they will send out rejection letters to those students who are not going to be interviewed.

If you are interviewed, the rejection letters don't come until months later.

Just got back from Baylor a few hours ago and kinda had an odd experience. I had one of the interviewers rip me up.. Didn't matter what it was everything she didn't like, however, the other two interviews went great and they didn't have anything negative to say. Im not sure if thats planned to see how you handle criticism or what? It honestly was like nothing I had experience there or at the other schools. After she went on and on about how much she didn't like my application she said "At this time I can not recommend your" and I said "thank you for your honesty and your advice and I will be sure to work on all of those things you mentioned. Thank you for your time and it was a pleasure to meet you." I didn't know what else to say so I just tried to stay positive. The other two interviewers complete contradicted her..? so thats why im a little baffled. Is anyone else on here that interviewed nov 3 with me? Or has anyone else had a similar experience?

Oh, gob, I had one like that too. A couple of interviewers tried to eviscerate me. Not to dishearten you, but I had my interview with Baylor last year. Haven't been invited back this year because I assume they hate me. I got rebuked by Dr. Miller for my lack of dental experience (80 hours at that point) and for not having taken histology (I think 3 or 4 schools in Texas offer undergrads histology, if I'm correct) and another destroyed me on my low intro biology grades. Not as bad as what you've wrote but maybe, hopefully, you misunderstood them. I'm pretty sure they intentionally try to stress you out just to see how well you can handle the pressure. So don't worry. Go eat a Family-Sized bag of Dorritos. You'll feel great for the initial 37 minutes. 🙁

I think that Baylor does that on puropse. I have heard that the 3 part interview is designed to have one person hate you, the other person love you, and the third trys to remain neutral.

This is just to see how well you can handle yourself under pressure (although it's not fun for you at all).

As far as what she said to you.... I don't know what to think about that. Either she was just being really mean or testing you to see how you can pull through. Judging by your response, I think you did fine, but only December 1 can tell...

Good luck, and stop sweating about it. There is nothing you can do now excpet wait... I wish you the best 🙂

For those of you who are poor (like me) and read this comment, but didn't feel like checking the link in response to the comment... Here goes

Texas Admissions Seat Deptosit (as of 2009):

Baylor
~$200.00
Houston
~$30.00
San Antonio
~no deposit

Not too bad considering some schools outside of Texas tend to have a deposit ranging from $1000-$3000!!!

Thanks Izziemonster that did make feel a little better, I really hope thats the case because I definitely experienced what you described.

For those waiting for interviews at Baylor, on Wednesday(nov 3)they said they will be ending their interviews on Dec 3. First round of acceptances dec and second round mid jan.

Also they mentioned that the ADA apparently shortened the time period you have to respond to your acceptances, somewhere around 29-32 days.

Every interviewer is different. I don't think they plan for one interviewer to rip you apart and the others to be pleasant. She may have been testing you... she may legitimately not like your app. Who knows? It sounds like you handled it well and I won't stress too much about it. One interview is not going to doom you.

Are there any OOS's who have gotten interviews at any of the Texas schools?

the pre-dec1st interview invites are done by now, no?

I guess I should be expecting a rejection from Baylor on Dec 1st. Does Baylor send out rejections the same day?

i saw a sneak peak of the baylor interview schedule and I believe dec 3rd is the last day for interviews for a while

I was told by the office during my interview at Baylor that Dec 3 was the last day for interview. Their class will be filled by the middle of Jan

I got an invite today for November 29. Me. I think they might have accidentally sent me an invite instead of a rejection. 😀

Nice! If I were you, I would delete EVERY post you have made on here. You don't want Dr.Miller reading out one of your posts during the interview. Lol

Haha. Dang, I didn't know I was that offensive. Lol. I might have to do that. The interview is for SA though. And I can just picture Dr. B reading every single word of my rant. 🙁

I don't think they send out rejection letters until they know they have a full class, regardless of whether or not you have interviewed with them.

What time do they start sending emails for rejection or acceptances on dec 1st lol

No, they'll send out rejections before the class is full.

Truth is, if you haven't gotten an interview at Baylor yet, you can probably expect a rejection around mid-Dec. They don't keep you waiting.

Omg, it is happening all over again. When I applied to A&M for ugrad, I was rejected. However, I was accepted to UT. Now I interviewed at both the UT schools and not Baylor (A&M health center). Oh well, I don't want anything associated with A&M anyway (aside from my fiancé).lol. I mean, come on, who designs a campus with railroad tracks running through it? Lol

Haha. I live next to those tracks. Close enough to where my apartment shakes. I really, really hate those trains. 🙁

And don't worry about it man. Who needs Baylor anyway?

I really need you Baylor...pretty please.

It's funny cause when my fiancé came to the UT campus, she was like "wow, so this is what a real campus looks like". Lol. I do miss going to blue baker and that thai place at A&M, though.

Dang, son. You're making it sound like we're just a big barn or something. It's not like we have animals just walking around all freely...Nevermind. 🙁

So I called Baylor one last time to understand why I was not interviewed. Here is what was mentioned:

- Shadowing hours of 100 or higher.
- Bio majors (or people with many upper division credits)
- Decent GPA and DAT (average or a little above average is ok)

I asked why Baylor is not looking for diversity of background in the class, and I was told that being a bio major would be the best route to get in there. They told me that even a 4.0 and high DAT cannot overcome that! Oh well...I have to say that Janet is very nice and spent a good deal of time going through my application with me.

I had 55 hrs of dental shadowing on my app but had a lot of medical shadowing before I made the switch. One of the interviewers gave me a hard time about that but once you have spent some time there you have a general idea of what its like, I really don't understand why they want so many hours, does someone with 500 hours make some more qualified than someone with 90?

Did you just have prereqs to apply and no other upper level bio courses?

I had micro and biochem completed along with the prereqs.

Janet is a saint. If I get in, I'd like to make her a rack of my home made bbq ribs. Super helpful and friendly (Janet, not my ribs).

Anyways, bummer that you don't seem to match up with baylors unique philosophy, but I'm sure SA and Houston will come through for ya. All the tx schools are great.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Baylor admissions committee met today to decide who to send out the 90-100 letters of acceptance. As a D1 currently, I know how stressful of a time this year is. Best of luck to all who interviewed!

SNAP............... knock on wood!

I got an interview invite from Houston today. Yay. 😀

I'm still really worried I pissed Baylor off somehow. Last year at my interview, they unloaded on me about everything wrong with my app (basically everything) so I went and worked on all of those problems this cycle. I think I'm going to follow your lead and call them to see what I did wrong. We should call them after we get the physical rejections, right?

A Question regarding recommendation letter:

I had two dentists I assist sent recommendation letter on the following contact address:

7703 Floyd Curl Dr
San Antonio, TX 78229-3900
Phone: 210-567-3752
Fax: 210-567-6721

But the actual address on TMDSAS website is this:

The University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio
Registrar
Office of Student Services
7703 Floyd Curl Drive
