One simple way, not 100% accurate mind you, is to put your pinkies in your ears and open as wide as you can. If you feel a pop, you could have TMD. It's a good way to see how tight the joint is. Do you have symptoms of ringing in the ears, headaches, tightness of jaw? Those are all good indicators. Finally, a TMJ exray will be necessary in order to precisely diagnose whether or not you have TMD. It's not fun, but is definitely treatable. Good luck..
