what are the functions of capsular ligament and temperomandibular ligament?
i am a bit confused.😕
Capsular ligament
encircles the condyle, say
360 degrees ROUND ROUND... AROUND THE CONDYLE!
The fibers are attached above(
superiorly) to the Articular Tubercle, circumference of mandibular fossa and squamotympanic fissure. And, inferiorly to the NECK of the mandible.
(Visualize circumference of mandibular fossa as a CIRCLE ABOVE and articular tubercle and squamotympanic fissure as just the anterior and posterior limit of this circle. The fibers of capsular ligament runs downward and encircles the neck of the mandible;
like a CONE; like an upside-down "party-hat 
". The
fibers run downward plus both forward and backward; like different set of fibers forward and different set running backward and others filling the previous two sets.)
The
temporo-mandibular ligament is on the LATERAL side, on the OUTER SIDE only. And also the fibers of temporomandibular lig. are attached above to the articular tubercle and below to the postero-lateral aspect of the neck. (The
fibers run DOWNWARD and BACKWARD ONLY)
Therefore the temporomandibular lig. re-inforces the Capsular lig. on the lateral aspect.
Function of capsular lig. is to enclose the TMJ and THEREBY PERMITS movement at the TMJ. Capsular lig. is loose above ( above the articular disk) and therefore only Gliding is permissible. And below the articular disk its tight to permit both gliding aswell as rotatory movements.
Ligament, by definition, connects a bone to another bone. So the function is to maintain the skeletal integrity. They maintain the joint in place, normal anatomy that is. (When they fail; dislocations occur.)
