I figured I might as well start a thread on this considering there are a bunch of us who are on hold and hoping to eventually hear something from downstate. anyways, i've been on hold since january..didnt they say that they would figure out the waitlist stuff soon. also does anyone know if ppl on hold get accepted from now until may 15...

I've also been put on "hold" from Downstate since January. I tried contacting the admissions office regarding this and didn't get a straight reply, other than they're going to review our applications once again the the spring and will render a decision shortly after that. Can anyone else shed any light on this matter--and what the "hold" status really means?

Also, does anyone know if the SUNY Downstate class is full yet?

i haven't even received an answer yet post interview! (although i did interview late). people on this site received acceptances within the last few days so, regardless of whether or not their class if full yet, they're still accepting people and making decisions. if i remember from last years waitlist post (you should search for it, i think it gave a pretty indication of how things at downstate work), people who got off the waitlist did so starting in may (maybe late april?). i can't remember for sure though. best of luck!

I'm on hold at Downstate as well. Are we supposed to send them any extra information such as fall semester transcripts for those of us still in undergrad?

I think sending them your fall grades is a good idea. I sent them an update letter not too long ago, so hopefully it makes a difference for the better!

I, too, am on the post interview hold list. I've been on since January. I haven't heard anything, but I've sent a letter of interest. Other than that, I'll just be waiting.

i do know a lil bit about how things at downstate work, considering this is my second time applying. last year i interviewed there in mid-march and was put on the alternate list. and never could get off of it. however, i do remember students that were on a high priority alternate list as well. and that's what i dont remember about because the high priority list came out first and i believe those were ppl who interviewed earlier..cause by the time i recieved my letter downstate only had an alternate list. well that's what i think. anyways, regardless this is a long process and hopefully those of us on hold will hear back soon as far as what list we are on.


i also wrote them an update letter and a strong letter of interest...

i find it extremely frustrating that i have a very vague idea of what this actually means. (i can hardly explain it to my parents)

its like a waitlist for the waitlist or something

I haven't heard post-interview yet either; I interviewed mid-Feb. I know from many people (some of whom managed to get accepted straight away) that Downstate is very SLOW in responding, which stinks.

A friend of mine interviewed early-mid Feb. last year, didn't hear for a couple of months and then was placed on the "High priority" alternate list. He got in very shortly thereafter. My take is that everyone gets in off the HP list, then some off the general alternate list. Can't shed much light on the Hold situation. I've called a couple of times to no avail. I hope we all hear *something* soon.

I interviewed around Thanksgiving. I received a letter that I was put on hold around late January, early February. Still haven't heard anything from Downstate yet.

I'm officially joining all those in the "hold" bin. Got my letter today. Guess I assumed they weren't putting people on hold anymore -- that I'd either be WL, rejected or possibly accepted. I have no idea what the hold means, other than that I'm really bummed. bah humbug!

Yes, synapse, mine asked that I send in any Fall semester grades (or later, I guess) if i have them. I don't (I'm finished w/ courses and work f/t). I would send yours in asap, and also let them know you are interested via a LOI if that's applicable.

I can't believe that Downstate hasn't gotten back to us yet regarding our hold status...no word yet about rejection/waitlist/acceptance, though I seriously think that a straight acceptance at this point is impossible.

I'm going to try and contact them tomorrow...I'll update you folks on what I hear.

mine says, "The Committee reviewed your entire application following your interview, and has decided to place your application in the 'Hold' catagory. That means that your admissions status will be reviewed again in the Spring. Of course, you may hear from us earlier."

uhhhhm, according to the calendar... it is almost summer. "earlier" than spring is winter. i just received my "hold" letter this past weekend. interviewed in march.

I hope that's good news! That is encouraging, but isn't it really strange that they won't look at our applications again until the end of May? For some reason I had the impression that applications needed accepted/rejected/waitlist decisions by this date...

At any rate, since we do have a chance of still being accepted right out of this category, good luck to everyone currently on hold! I truly hope we all hear good news. The wait is killing me!

i think maybe to be on "hold" means your interviewer hasn't sent in their evaluation, or they might not have been available to show up and present your case infront of the admissions committee since your interview. Basically it would mean they can't pass any judgements on your apps because a big component is missing..

I don't know if that is necessarily true. One of my friends interviewed in October and found out he was on hold in November. He's been in the hold category ever since. I would hope his interviewer presented his case in 6 months.

I believe the hold category is evaluated before they start pulling people off the waitlist. Once your app. undergoes evaluation, you may get an outright acceptance, rejection or be put on the waitlist. That way everyone has some sort of final decision to their application. But then again who really knows....

Let me join your club. I too have been on hold since October. I asked a student who talked to us about Downstate during my interview. He too like me was from california. When i didn't know that hold was different from the waitlist, and I asked for my status on the waitlist they wrote

"Are you referring to a "HOLD" Letter? This means that your application is being held until it can be viewed in a more positive light. This should be viewed as a positive thing. Please try to be patient."

And later they wrote "Although we cannot and will not comment on your specific case. Based on historical data a person on HOLD may stand a reasonable chance for admission at this point."
This was written in December. So obviously it was a while ago.

3 weeks ago, I received a "HOLD" letter.

Today, I received an email from Dr. Terracina without even emailing them at all. This is what it says:

Dear ____:

Thank you for your continued interest in SUNY Downstate's College of
Medicine. You are currently in our "Hold" category, and I'm writing to
update you on your status. The Admissions Committee will re-review your
application in June, and you will be sent a written notification of
your final status by the end of June.

Thank you for your patience during this process. Should you wish to
withdraw your application from our active files, to benefit other
applicants, please send an email to [email protected] or send a fax to 718 270-7592.


🙁 🙁 This isn't looking or sounding good at all... I won't hear till end of June?!?!?!!?!?!?!? 😡

Got the same letter, I don't see how this is different from the written letter they've sent and perhaps this is just the email version of their written letter. It would be interesting to know if additional people on the hold list category have recieved this letter.

Just called the admissions office again to see what the deal was. one guy on the other forums said that he called and they told him over the phone, so i said, what the heck. unfortunately, the nice but extremely not helpful woman on the phone gave me the same spiel about not giving status updates on the phone and that everyone in the "Hold" category would be informed of the final decision by the end of june. so i guess i will continue to run home every day hoping and praying for a DHL package. This is killing me. this is my last hope for this year and i cant seem to conjure up the effort the complete the AMCAS app until i know for sure. This application process is going to drive me to drink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

got my call last Wednesday at work and was offered admission off the 'HOLD' category. i interviewed in early March, put on HOLD late April/early May. my acceptance package did NOT come by DHL but rather in a very, veerrry slow first class mailer, which wasn't even sealed btw, just metal-tabbed... even got my first name wrong on the address label (but thankfully correct on the letter!!). talk about a paranoia-inducing ride... 🙄

good luck to those still waiting!! i will most prob. be matriculating to downstate and can't wait to meet my new classmates!
