I'm talking about mailing in the AMCAS print out and not wanting them to see the other schools you applied to- I called 6 schools early this morning before work- Baylor, Einstein, WUStL, Tulane, Yale (forgot the last one). Anyway, ALL of them said there was no need to send in that list, only one lady at Einstein asked her superior to make sure. Since i called from work, i had the luxury of anonymity, and asked out right if it would look "suspicious" or "iffy", none said it would look that way. I figure with all the apps they get, they probably weren't gonna give it much of a look over anyway.

Take care all

thank you for this. i've been debating what to do. luckily for me my designated schools wound up on a page with nothing else important, so i could feasibly just not mail the page in. i really don't see how a school could consider it to be 'iffy' or 'sneaky' since it's info that they never received in the past. i can only see their access to this information working against you.

I really don't think it matters either way. The director of admissions at Iowa told me that they encourage applying to a variety of schools to ensure that the applicant
a) gets accepted and
b) enrolls at a school that fits them
She said that, at Iowa at least, the admissions office would take steps to make sure that this part of the app would not have an adverse effect on applicants.
Take home lesson: stop worrying about the designated schools section--the schools probably care much less than you think they do.
