To Get a 236?

I am an incoming M1 this fall at MCV.

I am curious as to how hard I will have to work to obtain a superior Step I score? Ie, hours per week, months in advance, etc.

As a history and philosophy major, my bio + chem background is significantly weaker than most of my peers. Will I reasonably be able to overcome this knowledge differential?

I understand 236 is somewhat arbitrary. My choice of it stems from mean and median scores reported in "Charting the Match"

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

read the experienced threads for 2009/2008. There will be plenty of preformed tips and schedules on how to achieve a 236. I would just do well in you curriculum and worry about it halfway thru second year.

I don't have the latest stats, but maybe 236 is exactly one SD above the mean for 2008...or maybe he calculated a specific percentile he is aiming for (like 85th)...or was 236 the lowest 3-digit score that correlates with a 99 on the (meaningless) 2-digit score? I'm also curious!

I chose 236 because it is concomitantly the lowest score which translates into the two-digit 99 score (which I understand is not important) and several points ahead of mean scores for Radiology, NS, etc.

well i would give you my foolproof study plan, but it's only designed for a 237 and i wouldn't wanna mess things up for ya.

During 2nd year, Dr Costanzo will have board prep lectures during lunch. Go to these. Dont stress out about them. You will meet with her during the spring of 2nd year and she will help you with which books to read and a day-by-day schedule. If you follow it, you will do fine. Based on your grades and MCAT scores, she will be able to give you a roundabout number as to where you will score. You will then have a 3-5 day review through MCV and then start studying alone for about 30+ days. Dr Costanzo definitely knows what she's talking about too. I did very well using her plan.
