I recently completed about 85% of kaplan q bank during the school year with classes and went through about 50% of Uworld thus far. SOme of the kaplan q bank questions I had done multiple times 2X-3X for most of pathology and pathophsyiology/physiology, biochem, pharmacology. What I can say is that whoever wrote on SDN thread "My thoughts on the kaplan q bank" previously that kaplan tests too much minutae, was inferior to uworld, not representative of step I, UWorld questions are ten times harder is a not paying attention. I can say that there were some kaplan questions that were almost verbatim written similar to Uworld questions with the same answer choices. There were overlapping concepts tested in both banks. The questions used similar pictures especially pathology and pathophysiology but the way it was presented was slightly different. IE: in kaplan theres questions that reference having knowledge of Reid INdex in bronchitis while in uworld they show you a picture and expect you to know the mathematical relationship involved in the Reid Index equation. Additionally, the buzz words, and classic presentations used in kaplan stems are very similar to UWORLD...shipyard workers for asbestos, jaw pain in Giant cell. From doing kaplan I felt very prepared for UWORLD and noticed my UWorld percentages almost 20 percent higher than my kaplan scores. personally think the more times you see a concept or disease the better. It definitely helped me on timing and speed read through questions.

Neat. Lol at doing kap qbank questions 2-3x

I know, right! These are probably the same idiots that go to IHOP when there is a perfectly good Waffle House nearby.

"perfectly good Waffle House"; an oxymoron if I've ever heard one.

I never understood this desperate desire to reach a consensus and to be right.

If you think Kaplan is good and it works for you, that's great. No need for an essay, simply say "I found Kaplan as helpful as Uworld."

Nothing matters until you get your Step 1 score. Then all that disappears once you match into residency.

Dunno about you, but I'm going to have my Step scores hanging next to my Diploma.

Understandable.

It's good to think Step 1 is everything before you take it. Then it is really important until you receive enough interviews. Then it's filed neatly next to your MCAT score and your college GPA.

If you could put your story or frustration in paragraph form, perhaps introduce a few more periods. That would be great.

I have a wall with my standardized test scores in lovely mahogany frames going back to the citywide exam I took in 4th grade and the IQ test I took when I was 5.

Actually some fellowships look at them still. All ophtho fellowships do. Step1-3 scores are listed on the first page of your fellowship apps. I don't know how much they actually care about them, but it's always good to have something positive than negative (a bad score) on your app. Another reason not to blow off Step 2 and Step 3. You probably don't need to blow the later Steps out of the water, but you don't want bad scores unnecessarily making you look bad.

I'm gonna go ahead and say what everyone in this thread not from the south is thinking: Waffle House is ****ing gross. Seriously. That restaurant feels like a work-release site for sex offenders that cooks overstocked food from vendors who couldn't even sell that **** to poor Caribbean islands.

Come at me.

You have stated nothing but the truth. I always just assume it's a front for a trucker/prostitution ring.

and I'm in the South.

I'm pretty sure there is just a lot of trolling in here, but I'm still gonna go ahead and give a serious response.

Waffle House may not be a four star restaurant, but if you want an some hashbrowns with 7 ingredients piled on top at 4 in the morning after leaving the bar, there's nothing better. Don't kid yourself, Denny's and IHOP are just as gross, but the difference is in Waffle House you can actually see the cook, so you know the amount of times your toast dropped on the floor before getting to your mouth is minimal.

I like the direction this thread has taken.

So, serious question: for those of you not from the south, where do you go for food at 2am when you're drunk and the bar closes. Or does your hair gel provide you nourishment the whole night through?

I lived/live in the South (if you count Texas) and I have never entered a Waffle House. Most friends and I would go to those all night Mexican taco cabana type places. Chachos. In Austin, Magnolias are overrun by the after club/bar crowds.

In Chicago, um...a zillion places.

In SF they all stand around on the street after bar hours still trying to find hook ups while eating pizza.

Well, yeah, if you live in a major city then there's really no need to visit a Waffle House or any similar place. You've got choices.

Only parts of Texas are the south, and I'd put Austin right at the margin. Still, that's a pretty unique and cool place, so I'm not sure it's representative.

When I lived it California it was all Denny's everywhere.

Waffle House is like Denny's embarrassing, redneck cousin.

Sure. Just like residencies include things like club memberships.

Step 1 will be lower than Step 2, residency performance, research, connections / letters of rec, etc for fellowship.

At waffle houses I've seen:

1. Illicit drug use
2. Fights
3. Nudity X2

At other food establishments, including IHOP and Denny's, I've seen:

1. Food
2. Activity related to making and selling food

a valid message.

In SF the best drunk food is Mission Dogs, though there is some acceptable pizza open late.

There are fights, drug use and nudity at IHOP/Denny's. You just have to go at the right time 😉
