I know this is something that I never considered so I thought I would put it out there for those of you still in the application process. Attending a state school is always great on the financial side as most are very affordable compared to private schools. There is something you should consider, however, that most people don't think of. Take a good hard look at the state's budget situation, because it will directly effect your education. At the state school I attend, the state is in a huge budget crisis. As a result, a lot of funding has been cut and we are severely under-staffed. In some clinical courses where we are setting the foundation of our operative or pros skills we have 1 instructor per 15-20 students (which is ridiculous!). Not to mention tuition has raised about 150% in the last 2 years.

Just something to keep an eye on and question adcoms about.

Good luck

Whoa... Which school do you attend, Grimace?

I'm fortunate enough that my school (also a state school) is not suffering the same problem.. The State University of New York system is kind of a sacred cow to the state politicians in Albany, thankfully. 😀

In Texas, damn republicans have taken the cap off of the limitation a school can put on their tuition. The state expects tuition to rise around 130% over the next 5-10 years.🙁

But I am so poor!!!

Well to tell you the truth, I knew this would happen one day.
State education is pretty damn cheap and not all good things could last forever.

I just added it up and getting a BA and Masters only cost me $7950 in the state university system. I sure as hell used more than 8k in resources while I was there.

Biggest issue is a lot of state schools are upgrading to newer technologies and someone has to pay for it...so why not those that use it? Only seems fair.

Dont worry Brocnizer NYUCD will make up for that small 8k figure 🙂

UNC Tom. I am taking fixed pros and right now we have 6 lab instructors to help us for 80 students. For some very random reasons (ie, visa issues, military etc) we will be down to 4 faculty per 80 students 😱 This is the tip of the iceburg, have experienced a lot of crap because the school is in such a financial bind.

Just remember: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR

For those of you who can't afford private school, and you happen to have a good state school, state school is a good way to finance your professional education.

However, do not ever married for money. Go where you will be happy most. Otherwise, you will be in the worst, most miserable state of mind. And it affects your studying.

THINK 1000 TIMES BEFORE MAKING DEPOSITS ANYWHERE.

Some are going to question my decision here big time (hopefully you don't remember my state...Yah-e...shhhhh!)

I got into my state school and decided to go to NYU instead. Sure everyone bashes it, but damn I liked it a lot. Yeah it will cost me twice my state school but they have a hell of a lot more to offer here.

The decision was hard bec of the money, but I talked to a dentist that went to an expensive school and he said put the money aside, pick where you would go for the other attributes.

Granted with more debt your life style will be affected, but he paid off $220k in 6-7 years and still had a very comfortable living.
