I imagine many of you have jobs or are still finishing undergrad, but do you have any special plans in the next 6 months before med school?

Personally, I'm going to spend some time relearning Spanish (traveling to Madrid in May with my parents) and am considering auditing a University class where I do research (class would be Calculus, Greek & Roman Mythology, or Cancer Biology... leaning towards calculus, even though my high school self would probably slap me across the face ).

Yikes, don't take calculus! I'd imagine what you did for physics and your college bio classes would be plenty for med school, don't you think? Take Mythology, that sounds cool and you'll never have the chance again.

Personally, I plan to do as little work for as long as possible. 👍

im trying to figure this out myself. for now i have to finish my final year, and i will have to take english in the summer since im missing that pre req... but after all thats done, im thinking about travelling to south east asia, never been to that part of the world and i figure i wouldnt have a chance like this in a long time... but at the same time i kind of want to spend my summer with family and friends so i really dont know! i also want to learn the programing language for the iphone platform called objective C.
so lots of options i guess just hard to decide.

Work.

Then maybe I'll blow a G on a vaca or something.

I'm doing some travelling for the next two weeks--sort of mini vacation since I graduated back in December 2010. Until July/August when I need to move, I had thought of finding a job, but found that difficult since no one will want to hire me from Feb-June. If that is indeed the case, I'm just going to chill at home volunteering my time to some service organisations and hang out with friends/family before I go!

Continue conducting research till a few weeks before med school starts. And try to be as productive as I can be (ie. in terms of publications, posters, etc).

These next 7 months will probably be the longest 7 months of my life (so far)! Can't really complain though. 🙂

I figured that too. So I just didn't tell them I was starting school in July or August.

Finish up grad school and take a trip to India over the summer.
OP: definitely take mythology. I would if I had the time

I tested out of calculus I & II before college, but I've forgotten a lot of it (though I think it will come back fairly quickly). I was considering taking calc again because I want to get into some more advanced math and physics for fun

I just started a research position at a large University, and they know I will be attending med school sometime around late July... just sayin

That said, find an easy job that's fun, too. Work somewhere like Home Depot or a home/furniture store that will give you huge discounts to furnish your apartment!

We're pretty much on the same page... make sure to have some fun, too! Good luck!

India, awesome! In college I became very interested in Indian culture and especially Advaita Vedanta philosophy. Have fun

Mythology is very tempting.... I'm definitely leaning away from all science classes because I'll be studying medicine for the next (insert huge random number here) years

I would trade with either of you two only because I've been to India many times. Spain and Australia are near the top of places to visit for me, though!

I've never been sick after drinking the water in Aus. Haha, I went last year, for the first time after my friend won free tickets on a local radio station. We took the first flight ever down there on this particular airline, got free air/hotel for 10 days.

i'm going to be finishing up my current grad program - certificate in public health. i'm also back in the gym, trying to get to my ideal weight and body type so that during med school i can just "maintain". in general, i'm trying to establish a routine, fill my free time with things i love and with people whom i enjoy being around. definitely getting 6+ hours of sleep every night that i can 🙂

Plans are in the works for a trip to Rome, probably for a couple of weeks. Other than that, I am going to set my end date at the job so that I can do *absolutely nothing* for a month before school starts.

Well, I have to endure about 3.5 months more of research, which is going to be totally painstaking. After that, I'm going to Europe for a month, then back for a family Hawaii trip for 10 days. After that I plan on doing absolutely nothing productive before medical school except maybe learn Spanish .

I have to work up until a couple weeks before school starts. Then I'm sure I'll be too busy preparing and moving to do anything fun (not to mention I'm dirt-floor poor right now).

Working. Strangely, even though I was accepted to med school, my landlord still wants me to pay rent.

Haha I was reading all of these thinking wtf! does nobody have financial obligations they actually need to work for??

I'm right there with you man. Working to pay rent, maintain health insurance, save up for a second car for the wife, and possibly a couple new kayaks.😀

I forgot to add, the amount of lead I'm going to throw down range from my new smith & wesson is going to be staggering. I love getting bricks of ammo for christmas!

Just because you're working doesn't mean you can't take up a new hobby or project during your free time. I think it's important for us MS-0s to realize that once med school starts we're not gonna have much spare time for learning new, non-medical skills or information.

Nice! Same thing for me! Accomplished a litte of that yesterday in .308.

I really don't have much free time, between my full-time lab job, teaching an MCAT prep class, taking classes in the evening, my consulting gig, and trying to spend time with my friends once in a while. Having an acceptance under my belt is a relief, but it hasn't magically given me time, money, or energy to add anything to my already full plate. I actually expect that starting med school will be a bit of a relaxing relief.

Working until probably around the beginning of July. Also, hopefully buying a house.

Working my full-time job in clinical research until a couple weeks before school starts. In the meantime, I hope to revive my Spanish and learn a bit of clinical epidemiology and biostatistics.

What I can't decide is whether or not I should take a 2-week international trip! I'd like to have some money saved up for med school, but something out-of-country would nearly deplete my funds. So I have to decide between that option and doing a handful of short camping trips around the Pacific Northwest. 😕

My last day of work, where I've been for 3 years, is on June 3rd. Then June will be a month of spending some time with my parents/sisters, seeing my long distance boyfriend for more than 72 hours at a stretch, and attending a friend's wedding.

July - me and the boyfriend are going to South America for 2-3 weeks! Hoping to hit Chile, Peru, and Argentina. Plus moving us both to wherever we'll be moving (hopefully closer to each other than we are now, he's a professor who is job hunting).

I've already started a savings account and putting as much as my paycheck as possible into it so I don't have to worry about funds in the summer. Plus I won't be paying rent for June and July since boyfriend's place/ sister's apartments in Chicago/ parents house in FL are all free 😀

Working full-time at my clinical research position... Working part-time teaching a night biology course and labs at a local community college... And going to Paris in March during spring break! So far, that is all I have going... After the Texas match when I figure out which school I may actually choose, I will fill my free time with figuring out where I will live (My husband and I really want to buy a house if we stay in Texas) and deciding on all the details (like moving, buying a laptop, getting books, etc). Sounds like this year is going to be really crazy!

Going to New Zealand for 6 months to enjoy free rugby games and a ton of hiking!

I'll be working still, probably until June. I'm also starting a biochem class, since I haven't taken that before. I think the bf and I are going on some sort of vacay in April/May (not sure where exactly, but we've been hunting on TravelZoo for something cool), and then roadtripping across the country to move to whatever city I end up in for school.

Kalyx: do this. I am longing to do this before medical school... the pacific northwest is so extraordinarily beautiful.

I have a question for all the people that say they're going to "learn Spanish": what does that mean? What are you going to try to learn in a few months?

Working full time at a hotel on Miami Beach... ahhh the crazy people I see every day 🙄

Other than that just trying to read as much as possible and learn Brazilian Portuguese (I'm hoping to go to world cup in Rio 😀).

I may or may not being doing any combination of the following, since I don't know if I'm moving or not for school:

1. Find a place to live.
2. Go on my first vacation in 6 years.
3. Quit my job.
4. Finally stick to a fitness plan that I've never had time for (hopefully before #2).

Wish I knew where I was going.

Congratulations. Thank your parents for helping you get this far. Have fun.

finish the remaining classes to graduate from college 😀

You make a good suggestion! 🙂 I am a native Seattleite and always in awe of this region's natural beauty. I'm so excited that I get to stay here for med school!!

My comment about reviving Spanish related to "brushing up," basically. I used to be near-fluent, yet took some time off from speaking it in order to learn another language. The knowledge is all there in my head (i.e. grammatical rules and vocabulary), but I've lost some confidence with speaking it. So I plan to pour over my old textbooks, go back to my exercise of learning five new words a day, and download some podcasts in Spanish (this I found to be *extremely* helpful the first time around!).

I have been filling out paperwork for the HPSP and should have my physical pretty soon. So, it is possible that the finances will no longer be a struggle, in several short months when I'm in med school! It will also mean the possibility of another huge, life-changing, time-consuming commitment, in addition to med school.

I've just been working part-time at the mall... I finally got my EMT license, but doubt I can get a second job doing that if I'm leaving this the summer. So I'm just enjoying the carefree times for now, slowly making arrangements for moving, etc. Got my first tattoo... trying to be more social... running a half-marathon, eating healthy and trying new recipes, watching awesome shows and movies, going to more concerts, visiting family and friends in Scandinavia. Pondering all my deep questions about life that I won't have time to think about soon. Getting enough sleep. "Live like you were dying" is sort of my theme here, I suppose!

Congrats to all! What a great relief it is still, to have that acceptance letter (or letters). I hope we can make the most of this time, and be ready to get our butts in gear later this fall!

Finishing off 4th year, graduating, partying it up...enjoying my last few quarters of college, a friend's wedding, and Europtrip with the girls hopefully!

What is wrong with you people? The day I got accepted to my first choice (after I was rejected from my real first choice), I spent the rest of the day emailing my extracurriculars saying that I needed to quit for personal reasons. I then dropped enough classes to go down to barely full time student.

I'm like 1 week into this new life of mine and it's pretty great. All I do is plan vacations, hang out with friends, masturbate, watch football, and chill. The only productive thing I'm doing is getting into breakdancing.

I wish I was still living off of my parents!!! Oh wait, no I don't.😎

I would like to live vicariously through you, sir.

Have you tried various permutations of multitasking these activities? THAT is where the true enjoyment lies...

The funny thing is that everything in the first sentence could conceivably be done simultaneously... throw breakdancing in the mix and you've achieved God-mode
