Long story short..I'm a caribbean MD student at Ross and things went sour right when I was about to complete basic sciences and I'm now forced to transfer to another school to be sponsored for Step 1.

Before I decide to go down this road, I wanted to evaluate other options because at the end of the day, its getting a residency that counts - and as passionate as I am to go through with this, I have to be realistic at the same time if I can match 2-3 yrs from now.

Going into dentistry is one of the options I evaluated.

Question is, at this stage of the application process for dental school, would it possible to apply for 2012? As of now, I have recommendation letters from faculty from undergrad and letters from faculty at the medical school. Plus volunteering I did, clinical experience, etc..

The only thing missing of course is the DAT and I never shadowed a dentist.

any input would be appreciated, thanks

If you can go right off without studying and ace the DAT and have all of your letters of rec in within the next week and have above a 3.5 GPA you might have a shot. Having at least 50 hours of shadowing is important for nearly all the schools however.

Your story stinks.... from the view of a dental school. It screams that you're looking for a backup option. Adcoms are smart enough to realize when people aren't truly interested in dentistry (i.e. limited/late dental shadowing, full blown medical track changing to dentistry at the last minute, etc.). I wouldn't touch your application with a 10-ft pole.

I'm not trying to be rude, just giving you the reality that you'll have to overcome. IMO, you'll just be wasting $320 DAT fee, a month studying for DAT, $$$ in application fees, all while trying to obtain 30-50 hours minimum of shadowing hours, not to mention being very late in the cycle.

If you really wanted to attend dental school, then you would need to aim for 2013 and spend a full year shadowing, working as a dental assistant, etc. to prove that you're serious and committed about dentistry.

Remember, schools do not want someone to drop out at any point in the program since they cannot afford to lose the tuition revenue. There would be red flags about you possibly dropping out too and hence why you would need to spend a year proving to them otherwise.

Preciate the honesty and info and yea I see where you're coming from

I can see no convincing reason for you to apply. Next cycle.

Shouldn't you have evaluated your options before you dove in the Caribbean waters? Aren't the "only thing missing" important when deciding on another path?
