Is it too late to apply for Army 4 yr HPSP?

If it is too late, should I wait and apply for 3 yr HPSP?

OR

Appy for 4 yr scholarship and see what will happen?

if they don't accept me for 4 yr program, they automatically consider 3 yr program?

Army is usually the last to fill up due to sheer size. It wouldn't hurt to try. What do you have to lose?

You have a better chance at the 4 yr than you do a 3yr. Apply now and if you don't get picked up you will have a chance to be considered for the 3yr.

I'm not sure about the Army but the Navy has already filled ALL of its HPSP scholarships for next year. Since the HPSP programs have been easily filled the past two years, the Navy is not currently offering the 2 and 3 year HPSP scholarships. The signing bonus and the increase in stipend, in addition to the uncertain economy has made the HPSP programs very popular.

I would apply as soon as possible or contact a recruiter if your even a little bit interested. Good luck!

I am pre-medical; however, my friend has taken her DAT for dental school. Anyhow, I think people should really know what their talking about before posting...no disrespect intended. In addition, I think people should take what a recruiter tells them with a grain of salt, especially since my cousin (who is my mother's cousin) was a recruiter in the air force for several years. That being said, I will tell you that the air force recruiter here is always telling applicants they must submit their information by December, which is not true. The deadline for most officer commissions (all commissions other than future lawyers, doctors, etc) in the air force is December; however, this is not true for the HPSP scholarship, which is why they typically prefer that you receive a letter of acceptance before applying.

This is not always the case. A letter of acceptance usually garantees that the applicant would be approved by the board...and this number has a positive affect on a recruiters career. Now, for my program (medicine) schools are accepting on a rolling admission basis, meaning they accept as the applications are complete. The sooner your applications is submitted the better as it increases the chances that you will received an acceptance letter well before the air force's deadline. However, I have been in contact with the Navy for the last two years, mostly because I like to stay informed. Despite their attempts to encourage me to enter their Nuclear Program, I was fortunate enough to get a recruiter that is not only concerned with recruiting numbers. Anyhow, I was informed that they accept on a rolling basis...meaning no deadline. This does not mean that certain times of the year would either increase or decrease ones chances of being picked up. I was also informed that one can either submit the HPSP Scholarship before obtaining an acceptance letter or afterwards, but I was warned by the recruiter that my scores on the MCAT needed to be 30 and above and my GPA must be above a 3.0 if I was applying prior to receiving an acceptance letter. Not only that, but my reference letter and resume needed to be on point. Again, all an acceptance letter does is increases the chances that you will be approved for the program. With most schools, dental or medical, an applicant does not hear anything from the school until late December early January. I know that for the MCAT one cannot apply for admissions for 2012 until May 2011...as such there is no way to apply for this scholarship before you can apply to the school. Hope this shed some light on the process. I did consult the air force, and with no respect intended, that recruiter was only focused on applicants that she thought would be picked up, thus rushing or dis-encouraging applicants from applying.

In addition, I think that anyone that decides to apply to either branches of the military for the purpose of paying off school loans, should really think about their decision (it's not something that should be taken lightly). My best friend, who is in the air force, works as a mental health technician. Prior to I think last year, military personnel could be called upon in war situations for jobs other than what they came in under. However, a new memo was passed stating that, especially in the mental health field, that these personnel could not be called upon for any other duty in war situations than for the job that they came in under. Why is this relevant? I am interested in psychiatry. However, most people have a fear of the military and should understand that in some positions, lawyers especially, can be called upon to perform duties other than their recruitment job. Sorry, I know I am rambling. Anyhow, good luck to anyone that is applying to the military.

I read somewhere that the new budget arrives in October. If we applied and got everything done now... can we be considered for a 4 year HPSP still?

No. If you are non-select this year and are wait listed, then they can consider you for the 3 yr scholarship that will begin after October. If they choose to, they may award people selected after October a 3.5 yrs scholarship - but that is not guaranteed and you should not expect it - but it has happened in the past.

Perhaps in the other branches of the military, as I stated earlier - The Navy has already filled ALL of its 4 year scholarships for classes beginning 2012 and will not be offering any 3.5, 3, 2.5, etc scholarships. In the past they were only offering the 3.5, 3, etc scholarships because they still had money left over from unfilled 4 year scholarships. Since they have filled all 4 year scholarships there is no money left for contracts of lesser service. This is directly from BUMED.
