too late to apply?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello everyone,

I wanted to know if it is too late to apply this year to DO and MD schools. I expect to be done with the primary AMCAS application at the end of this week. I am unfamiliar with the application process because this is my first time applying. I have a 3.75 GPA (3.63 sci gpa), 28 MCAT (11 bio, 10 Verbal, 7 physical). Ok EC.

Am i too late? Are there any spots left or would I be wasting my money? If i have a realistic chance to get into a single school then I would go ahead with the application.

It's important to remember that yes, you are late by StudentDoctor.net standards, but most pre-meds are not applying DO until right now. For DO, you have greater than average numbers and as long as your ECs aren't abysmal there's no reason to avoid applying this cycle.

I don't know enough about the MD process to give you advice on that front.

MD, yes you're late. DO, no you're not.

I submitted my primary app last summer and sent out a few secondaries in the fall. I was put on hold pre-interview at 2 schools. I didn't have a DO letter and my stats are in the "underdog" category. I found a DO to shadow and didn't end up submitting my Touro-CA app until March (again because I felt like I was wasting my money without a DO letter). I received an interview there within the month and was placed on the high alternate list. Obviously I didn't get pulled off the list, so I'm not advocating applying that late. My point is that you have good DO stats and submitting things now is fine in my book. Would it be better to have submitted earlier, yes, but nothing you can do about that now. You absolutely have a good chance of getting into more than one school, so I would get my primary in ASAP.

On a side note, you can look through the school specific threads to find out the secondary essays for the schools you are applying to. This way you can get them all written while you are waiting a month for your primary app to be verified. If you do that, you can submit every secondary you receive very quickly. Good luck!

thanks for the replies so far guys. I have only shadowed an MD. will this be a problem when applying to DO schools? (I intend to apply to most schools on the eastern coast).

EDIT: And thanks for the advice to do the secondary letters prior. Thats an excellent idea and I will be sure to do that.

Don't know how dated this is, but it's the only thing I found.

thanks for that. I guess i cant apply to the LECOM schools, or the Virginia schools although I was planning on doing that.

I see some schools require Dean's letter? I have never heard this was a requirement, so I do not have that. I will have to skip those schools as well...

At my school, a Dean's Letter was ridiculously easy to get. We have a Dean of Student Affairs or something and I just filled out a sheet with information on where to send the letter to and gave em $10. They sent a letter to PCOM basically stating that I was in good academic standing throughout my years in undergrad.

Bam. Done.

i did not realize it was that easy to get. Thanks for the heads up, ill head over to the Dean's office as soon as i can.

Yeah, shouldn't be a big deal. If you get accepted to medical school it looks great on your university so they should have no qualms with providing you the tools to do so.

It was crazy hard to get a deans letter at my school, they didn't understand what I was wanting at all, but I eventually got someone to write a letter saying I was in good academic standing, I almost think it was a secretary lol, but it worked

Is this the same as a letter from the prehealth committee? At our school, all the LOR were compiled along with a letter from the advisor

Basically. You can submit your committee letter instead of the Dean's Letter.
