I've been waiting for MCAT scores and haven't finished the Amcas application: I haven't sent for transcripts yet. What are schools with deadlines after October 15? Are my MCAT scores good for another year?

Most school have deadlines in November, December or even January. I'm not sure if any have an October 15th deadline. And yes, MCAT scores are valid for 3 years, although a few schools will accept even older ones.

It varies school to school, but MCAT scores will often be good for up to 3-4 years. Although it is not too late in an absolute sense, jumping in the ballgame at this point is going to be very difficult unless you are an extremely competitive candidate. Not to mention that there is going to be an added amount of stress since everything is going to be more compacted time-wise - after all, by the time schools get your amcas and get you a secondary, you may only have a couple weeks to finish all your secondaries and get them all back + LORs + cert forms etc. before their deadlines. IMO, taking a year off has been well worth it. I was in a similar spot to you last year, and pushing things back a year has saved me a ton of stress and allowed me to improve my app in almost every way. Just remember, the very last thing you want to do is a rush-job on med apps. It'll leave you feeling like you didn't deliver your full 100%...and if you don't end up getting in, you'll be back at the starting line next year minus several grand.

I think some schools require that you submit AMCAS by October 15. Johns Hopkins is one of these schools that I can think of.
