i was wondering if it would be considered too late to send in primary application for DO schools
i just wanna apply to Michigan State's DO school
my mcat is 11P 10V and 12B, and my cumulative gpa is a 3.79 with science 3.76. i only have about 700 hours of volunteering, im sure i can add random things to pick it up to 800, and i have been working for 3 years 15 hours a week at the child center at lifetime fitness.

Your stats are good, but it is really late to just be sending in your primary app. It'll be a while before you would even be considered for an interview. There going to wonder why you applied so late with good stats (backup is what they'll be thinking). But, if you're just wanted to apply to one school it won't be very expensive so you might as well try.

I would try. The issue is your motivation for doing this and backup may very well be seen as the answer.

Edit: If you're an instate resident you can explain on your secondary* that this is a motivation for you. However, if you're out of state its a huge expense to go to UMich (to the tune of 50,000+ for tuition.)

*I'm assuming the UMich secondary has space for you to explain why you want to go there.

How can it be too late with many application deadlines ending in March/April? I understand spots are filling up as we speak, but come on, his/her stats are great. I think the OP will be a great candidate despite the relative "late" submission. I would suggest applying more broadly, though. This way, all your eggs are not in one basket.

i didnt want to apply because i heard that michigan state requires a minimum of 800 hours to even look at you, but just recently i decided to add up all i did and i realized my volunteer hours are close to that. i live in michigan, and im applying not as backup, but since michigan state is (or at least was) the best DO school in the country and i would rather go to the best DO school in the country than some mediocre MD school.
btw does anyone kno if that whole 800 hour thing is true? lol

I've never heard of the 800 hour rule. Also, who told you Michigan State was the best DO school? I think somebody has given you some wrong information.

i looked just now at the SDN's ranking and it's 4th, still one of the best. i heard that rule applyin to michigan state only... does anyone kno?

It's really late for MSU, they aggressively try to fill their class by December 1.

SDN rankings, seriously? All joking aside, why don't you just call the school or at least PM somebody who has been accepted and ask them about the 800 hour rule. You have really good stats and I bet if you were just shy of 800 hours that it would be ok. Time is your biggest challenge now, not a couple of hours.

It's nowhere near close to late yet. Most schools have barely cranked up for the interview season. Tons of applicants start applying in January after they don't get any love from MD schools, interview in late February or March and get accepted. Schools have rolling admissions and they know that good quality applicants apply all throughout the season-- so, they hold spots.

One caveat, appllying to only one school is a very bad idea. It can greatly decrease your chances at an acceptance. While you're at it, apply to a few more.

MSU tries to fill their class by December. So it is getting late for them. With your stats, i'd say it's worth a shot. There is no 800 rule, they just say an :ideal: applicant has 750 or more. but if youre gonna do it, apply NOW. MSU is one of the first filled and you might end up vying for a waitlist spot.
ps- they DONT do interviews, their secondary is crazy long and you get accept/waitlist/reject off of your primary and secondary ONLY.

Why don't both MSU schools of medicine have the same admissions process? The MD school operates semi-rolling and does not penalize applicants who apply even all the way into January.
