this job exists to sign np charts for free and as a sigh of relief to carib grads that don't want to do FM. lets admit it if you graduated USMD you took this field as an easy way out and "work life balance", well the good times are ending soon my friends, cmgs see endless new residencies and docs in major metros already making sub 200 and they think why not implement this across the whole country. we will not see rates above 200 in the 2030s, our salaries will fall below hospitalists meanwhile the midlevels will still look at us like we are overpaid idiots because to them the job seems functionally the same and "I could've gone to med school too"

the only glimmer of hope was four year residency and that's out the window. the only way to prevent this was to protect our supply and protect our ownership but WE are not US anymore, don't you get it? it's OVER.

meh i work 12-14 days and have some good time off my group avg 290 an hour if i leave i can get another 300 job easily via locums or work with a cmg travel group compare that with some of my tech friends friends right now looking for jobs and it could be worse

I made as low as $150/hr to be near family/wife and also worked a ****ty job that I understand is still hemorrhaging docs

Since I'm region locked I left EM entirely, zero regrets

I was making 270 / hr PRIOR to partnership in a desirable area.

Yes, if you don't own your job, and resign yourself to be a CMG / hospital employed cog, you will have the above crash out.

I do however agree that I took the easy way out in choosing EM residency. I could have done Ortho or Plastics or whatever I wanted, but chose this mess because I was scared off by a 6 year surgical training path. Could be fully retired right now if I did ortho-spine.

Cant speak for you.. personally, i went to med school to do ortho. Didn’t take me long to realize it wasnt for me. Not sure EM was the easy path. I think the ROAD specialties are the easy path. I decided for. A bit i really wanted to do derm.. but man it was excruciatingly boring. Anesthesia was also a consideration but terribly boring as well. I might be one of the few. EM was / is right for me. That I got lucky to get a top 1% job is the cherry on top.

My main complaint is the nights, weekends and holidays. Depending on your group you can mitigate the pain. I always hate working weekends with my kids growing up. Makes you miss stuff. No great way to view it imo other than it sucking. The nights, i pay someone to work them.

But i find my job incredibly not stressful. I got a whoop recently, and my high stress time is literally never at work. I actually think it is comical cause people are like “your job must be so stressful”. Nah, life is stressful, at work i feel like i have a fair bit of control.

Personally my work stress-->
20% from circadian switches and irritation at weekends / evenings I want to be home, or working late and getting up early and having only 5hr of sleep...
75% from doing admin and being SO stressed about capacity, lack of space, lack of non-MD/PA staff, and the myriad things we cannot control that negatively affect our patient care, work, and lives....
<5% from the actual work of being an ED MD. I'm like a pig in **** at work.

Groups have different structures.

My current group it is an open market. Visible to all. The group gives guidelines as to what they recommend the night diff be. Then it’s a 1:1 deal. For me it’s the same person. Others in my group use a few night folks to work their share. My old group made the $$ incentive high enough and basically almost all nights got covered by the nocturnists (I used to be one).

Yeah. Have to accept what we can’t change. Not on shift I stress those things too. But honestly one of the beauties of FI is caring a little less. No sleep lost over anything work related.

Same here. Top 1% job in work environment and pay was decent. Rarely did nights which was great for longevity. Tried to be a nocturnist for a summer and it was the worst 3 months of my life. Night stipend agreed by everyone was enough to have full time nocturnist for 15+ yrs.

People thinking ER is stressful, I tell them it is like every other job. You get good at it and its no different than bookkeeping. Life with 3 kids/SAHM was great but stressful b/c I had less control than in the ER.

Admin wasn't bad back in the day either, they let us do what we wanted. I am sure it is diff now and mabye I worked in the golden years of EM.
