I am a predental student currently doing a senior research project. I am doing it on stem cells and mainly trying to focus on tooth regeneration. I was wondering if anyone can lead me to any Dr./Professors that are doing research for this. My thesis question will basically be-- What impact will stem cells have on businesses? So if anyone has heard of people opposed to stem cells because of the potenial for loss of buisness, that would be a great help. If you think about it, stem cells could save thousands of lives, but cost thousands of jobs. Think of all the medical/dental procedures/people that will no longer be needed. Any positive information would be appreciated.
I'm really looking for good credible sources not so much opinions on the subject.

Dr. Mary MacDougall at UT San Antonio. She does research on tooth regeneration. Last I heard, they have grown human teeth in vitro.

You can do a search on Medline for the author and see what papers she has published, and any review articles that turns up should also lead you to citations on the subject by other researchers.

I don't think tooth regeneration is much of a threat to dentists' jobs. SOMEBODY has to administer the treatment to regenerate lost teeth... And it's the dentists who will be doing that.

It would also be economically unsound to regenerate a tooth every time one gets a cavity... There will still be plenty of operative work to go around for general dentists.

UBTom expressed exactly my sentiments as i've posted in the dental forum. They can grow whatever they want, but they'll still need dentists as the final person to put whatever they've grown into the person. It's just that dentists will be transplanting stem cells or grown teeth rather than titanium implants that's all. 🙂
