I am currently applying to med school having already graduated from undergrad. I work part time, live with my girlfriend who I will marry, and spend the rest of my time shadowing, MCATs, etc. Anyways, we make enough money to not worry about bills, but are certainly just in transition to medical school and graduate school for her. Were not socking away money or buying houses or anything big.

My question is...Are there any MAJOR financial efforts I need to be making right now with limited income and six figures of debt looming on the horizon? If so, what are the three most important??

I have started a Roth IRA with a few thousand given to me from family and I try to contribute on a regular basis (albeit I could be much better). However, the rest of my money pretty much sits in checking/savings accounts.

Thank you and hopefully this helps others in similar situations.

1) Start a roth IRA
2) Dont get used to using credit cards for credit.
3) Be able to make a monthly/yearly budget and stick to it

I'd also talk with your med school financial aid office on what they expect spouses to contribute from their earnings to your education. I have known a few people who has spouses with great jobs - their aid packages reflected this by reduction of any need based aid. Just something to think about when timing your wedding.
