What is everyone's opinion on the top 3 dental schools in the country... putting aside cost, your stats, etc... all things being equal and just comparing schools. Going in as a rookie, coming out an all-star....

was this too broad of a question? I am not as well versed as some of you on this site... so i was looking for some insight. maybe if i were to narrow it down to the top 3 schools on the east coast? just looking for some feedback.... thanks!

There are no top three. The "goodness" of a school is subjective, it depends completely upon what you want from your education.

all things being equal and just comparing schools.

If all things are equal... well then they're all equal 😀

It really does depend on what you're looking for. They will all give you the opportunity for an excellent education though. I think those other factors such as COST, location, etc. are what most people end up basing their decision on.

i guess i am asking for people's opinions about what makes schools great in their opinion. i've heard that nyu gets a bad wrap for not being hands on... so i'm just looking for insight into different east coast schools. if this is still too broad, i guess i will look elsewhere... just figured this was the right place and people certainly seem to have opinions.

Opinions from random people on the internet are about the worst form of information you can get (except for my opinion, which is awesome) 🙂

Make your own decisions

well thank you for your cheerful comments. just trying to open the floodgates to areas i might not have thought about or looked into before. in actuality, while this forum may provide access to random people, it at least encompasses people who have relevant insight into the subject matter. and i thought the purpose of these forums were to exchange information and opinions. what kind of advocate to this site are you?

if you do not have something to add to the discussion, then simply move on. but then again, i wouldn't want to be making those kind of decisions for you.

Considering your well composed grammar and decent mannerisms I'm going to assume you're not too familiar with internet forums. The mission statement of this forum is to exchange information and opinions but (as you noted) most people here just bicker, argue and make fun of each other. Please, don't misunderstand my bluntness, I'm actually trying to help you here.

But if you insist on continuing, I'll go ahead and run out the course of this thread for you (since it's been made literally dozens of times before). Here we go:
Original Post: "Hey can you guys give me a ranking of the top dental schools

Poster 1: hay guys harvard adn columbia number on schools

Poster 2: *sarcasm* Howard, Meharry and Peurto Rico LOL

Poster 3: Ranking schools is pointless because it's incredibly subjective.

Poster 4: (Responding to poster 3) WHAT R U TALKING ABOUT IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS ARE THE BEST THATS Y THEYRE IVY LAEGUE NOOB

Poster 5: Go to the cheapest school

for everyone else reading this post, i was really looking more along the lines of a thread i was reading yesterday comparing temple to nyu. temple has great clinical work, etc. so if anyone has insight on any east coast schools, i would appreciate it. just trying to get a better picture of what is out there. that will help me to investigate so that i can formulate my own opinions and decisions from there.

thank you

ARG! This post sucks! It sucks so bad that I am going to waste time responding to this post to let it know how bad it sucks....and then I will critique how well a post is written and if it has any mispelled words, oh no, then I will go bizerk!!

Ok, now that that is out of the way, this is what I have heard: What you learn in Dental school you will basically relearn your next five years out of dental school. So, though the school will teach you a good foundation, it will not compare to what you will learn your first few years of actually practicing. Schools are not officially ranked, but on the website predents.net you can rank all of the schools in terms of GPA, DAT, PAT, Cost, and some other things I forget. I would say what is important in a school is what percentage of their students pass the board exams. I hear that NYU is really good about passing the board exams, but I am not sure where this information can be found or if there are published stats on each school for how many students pass each board exam. For me at this moment my top three schools are solely based on location and price, and I do not want to list them for fear that everyone else will apply to these schools upon finding out that they are my top three, which I am sure would happen.

I am not exactly sure why I wrote the top part of my last post.......

Reason: My fiance liked these places, I like these places, and my visits to the schools were positive.

If you have a bit of spare money and the time, visit those places you are interested in towards the end of the week. If you're 21, find out where the students there go for happy hour or just to relax, and chill out. Pretty amazing how candid they can be when buzzed and/or relaxed.

This forum breeds bitterness -- which is why I love it so much!

To the OP, I think what people are trying to say is that the "best school" is entirely different for different people. They are assuming that "best" in this case means "best choice" or "best option" for a particular individual.

Now, if I'm reading your post correctly, you're looking for the best program in terms of... what? Best quality of education? OK. That's a start. Columbia and UConn students take their first two years with Med students. Their students graduate with the best academic understanding of the profession and a lot of people would agree that these two schools offer the "best" didactic education.

But aren't we going to dental school to become dentists? Aren't good dentists good because they have a solid clinical foundation? What schools require students to do the most procedures? Which school would have the "best" clinical education? Temple? NYU?

So in the first case we have schools that are graduating highly academic individuals who, at least by Columbia's own admission, do not have an adequate amount of clinical preparation to enter the working world as competant clinicians -- at least without another year or two of post-grad work. And in the second scenario we have schools whose students have fairly well-trained clinical skills and a much greater breadth of experience, yet at the cost of the depth of their understanding complex medical issues that may present in a patient.

So would the "best" dental school be one where both medical and clinical skills are sufficiently combined and balanced? Probably. When you find the school with this balance, you'll find your "best" dental school. And I'll leave it at that.

By the way, NYU is the best dental school in the country.

no one cares where you are applying to school. i have encountered enough paranoid/uptight kids in dental school--relax and enjoy the ride.

jb!🙂

Hahaha. She owns you and you're not quite married yet 😉

This is why the internet needs a sarcasm button 🙂

San Antonio, Baylor, and Houston... the 3 Texas schools 🙂

In all seriousness though, you will receive your DDS/DMD no matter where you go. They don't rank dental schools. The closest thing there is to ranking is based on research funding. It all depends on what you think is important and what you want (i.e. research, academia, clinical skills (general dentistry), post-grad residencies, public health, etc). And besides, I think most people on here will tell you the best school in the country is the one you get accepted to or the one you attend.

As I understand the original question...which program educates the best from matriculation to graduation in terms of being a professional dentist.

Meaning..which school does the most with the least? I really don't have an answer to the question. I agree though, that it's totally subjective and based more on "fit" than anything else for individuals and who they choose.

For me personally, I'll go wherever I get in. If I get into more than 1, then I'll take it from there.

The only options you really have is from who actually accepts you. If you get into 5 schools, then weigh out the pros/cons and make a decision based on what you think and how you feel about it.

That's really the BEST way to determine the BEST school IMO.

So which poster are you? You chose your school for a reason or reasons and you seem proud of it. If you want to help the OP, why don't you tell what you specificly like about your school? The OP asked "what is everyone's top 3" which is completely different from "how do you rank dental schools". Did you not have a top 3 when you applied? Sure, there is no ranking as it's not accurate, but everyone has a list for whatever reasons. 👎
