I don't think that very many state schools outside of some of the CA ones, UMich, and UPenn are going to be put down as top choices. However, that doesn't mean that they're not excellent schools- especially UT-Southwestern. It's just that people here are mainly listing their dream schools- often the top schools in the nation- and a lot of those happen to be private and either on the coasts or in the North. It was the same thing with undergrad. A lot of us dreamed of going to Yale, but were ecstatic to receive our full rides to state institutions...

Since when is UPenn a state school?

Hmm, this thread sure is popular. PSST, guys, go to the other threads where I posted last. Maybe you can answer some of my Qs. I hate to be the thread-killer all the time.

Top fantasy choice: Stanford...after 10 long years on the east coast, cali here I come!
Top realistic choice: Rochester
Top Southern choice, realistic but probably incompatible: Vanderbilt...I bet Asians are actually considered URM there.

I would actually be thrilled to go to Rochester, and I really think I would attend that school over any other. I applied to higher-ranked schools in unappealing locations like Columbia and Penn just *in case* I didn't get into my preferred schools like URoch, and instead got into those schools (by some freak accident of course)

Still, I'm going to keep an open mind during campus visits and try really hard to choose a med school that is the best fit for me

I've got to stand up for my beloved Vandy Med. First, we're plenty diverse, much more so than the undergraduate campus. No shortage of Asians here. Second, since when is Stanford "fantasy" but Vandy "realistic"? The rankings aren't that different, if that's what you want to go by. Maybe you could actually try that "open mind" thing out before declaring that a school's "incompatible."

Since Vandy's acceptance rate is more than double Stanford's?
I mean, I consider Vandy to be at the high end of my "realistic" schools and I consider Stanford to be "fantasy" as well. The fact that Stanford has an ultra-low acceptance rate says nothing about Vandy, but it does mean there is a difference in someone's realistic estimate of their chances at both schools.

Using acceptance rates to compare assumes that every applicant is totally equal. For a given applicant, the qualifications needed to get into the two schools are not that different.

I'd say both are excellent schools, but Stanford prefers people with intense research experiences more than Vandy does. In terms of popularity, Stanford wins as you can see from the acceptance rate.

I was actually going to comment on the diversity issue 'cause Vandy did not seem to be very diverse in my opinion. A couple of my classmates who interviewed/accepted at Vandy a couple of years ago agree with me on that so I guess I'm not alone. But keep in mind that we are all asians so we are more critical than others on this issue. We do think that my school is not very diverse either so it's not a big deal. I think it's all about the southern thing, where # of asians are still low.

KU...just always wanted to go here. Level I trauma center, involved in many clinical trials. Located in an inner-city area with a population with a large diversity of people. Due to the large variance of diseases and conditions among racial groups i believe being familiar with a wide range of patients is essential to becoming a complete physician. Many other schools meet the same criteria. Any school in Chicago would be great for this reason as well.

Hopkins- Best hospital in the nation, baltimore is one crazy city, good clinical experience dealing with emergency and trauma
Wash U- another great hospital, st. louis is pretty dangerous too, good experience dealing with emergency and trauma care

If money were not an issue, I'd say Tufts. I absolutely adore Boston. But I'll probably end up at a SUNY. If my parents get there way, I'd end up at Downstate. Then according to them I could live at home and carpool with my mom since she works around there. Somehow, that doesn't seem all too appealing.

Having gone through the interview process last year, i have come to the completely unbiased (not) opinion that the two best places to study medicine are Harvard and Cornell. Hands down.

I second this. IMO Tri-I and HST are sick collaborative programs, especially for MSTP. Too bad Cornell ships you off to Ithica for most of the PhD groups.

I think IU is a pretty good school, with good clinical sites and good professors. I don't think the name on my diploma is honestly going to make that much of difference so long as it came from a school that wasn't located in Mexico or the Caribbean

I grew up in Munster/S-ville/M-ville/Dyer/Valpo area, but I now live in Illinois (on the Indiana border next to Munster); I hope with my strong connections to the state I could get in, expecially since the NWI campus is just 30 min from my house, and I'd be able to live at home the first two years

Well, I may be the odd one out here, but my top choice is Hogwarts. Those muggle schools can't hold a candle to a real wizard school. 😛

you mean St. Mungo's? plz.
